 Chrysler Investing in Future Grand Cherokees |
AllPar.com just posted an article about an upgrade to Chrysler's Jefferson North Assembly plant, home to the Grand Cherokee, in Detroit.
Chrysler plans to invest more than $280 million on equipment and technology improvements for the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in preparation for production of the next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee and two unspecified new models. The investment would cover tooling and machine improvements, a new conveyor system, chassis assembly and line upgrades and an improved paint shop. The upgrade process would begin in July and be completed in 2010. It is expected to generate 419 new Detroit-area jobs.

 Keep the Grand Cherokee the size it is.If people wanted a commander, they would buy a commander. The GC outsells the commander, and has always outsold the commander... So why ... WHY make the GC bigger and turn it into a Commander?????? Espcially with oil at 106 a barrel. For the love of god, some of us like a mid-size upscale GC and dont need 4 rows of seats...
Dont screw up the GC Jeep. PLEASE. |

I was getting the feeling that the new owners were just going to strip the company of its worth, spending as little as possible along the way to the auction block. |

Re: Chrysler Investing in Future Grand Cherokees The "two unspecified new models" are the next gen Durango and Aspen/Pacifica replacements, both of which will be built off the same platform as the next gen Commander, er, Grand Cherokee.

Re: Chrysler Investing in Future Grand Cherokees Let's hope the Commander is replaced by the Rescue, the Cherokee is replaced by the Commander and the Compass is replaced by a Fuel Cell powered Willys with 80 mile battery only range and 50 mpg hybrid mileage, and Rubicon- Capable of-course.
In all seriousness, it's good that the Durango and Aspen are on their way out...Jeeps should cover that segment of the company, Dodge already has 4 door maxi-mega-mongo cab pickups in full size and midsize. The JT pickup makes sense from a Jeepers standpoint, because it is not a true pickup like the Brute, but more like a Scrambler, and won't cut into pickup truck sales on the Dodge end of the playlot. As far as the Gladiator is concerned, as much as I liked the concept, I'd bet it would just be a re-badged and re-skinned Dakota, and not Wrangler-based. As far as The Rescue, A niche vehicle at best, but mabye not the best choice for Chrysler at this time. As far as Hybrids, it is good that Chrysler is moving towards a 2-mode hybrid system, but I still say that making the entire fleet mild hybrid would save more gas collectively than a few (comparatively) special models, and in particular, JEEPS would benefit from a mild hybrid system on and off road, as the electric motor cold be uesd as traction control in rock climbing, and as propulsion in water fording. |
