SalesJeep Sales Down 49% in January

What can I add to the headline? Not too much.

Wrangler sales were the lone bright spot - virtually in the entire company - sales were up 4% from January, 2008.

The spin:

Chrysler LLC today reported total January 2009 U.S. sales of 62,157 units, down 55 percent versus the same month in 2008 (137,392 units), and down 31 percent from December 2008 (89,813 units). Total sales were suppressed by a significant reduction in fleet sales, which is aligned with the Company's sales strategy helping to maintain or improve the overall residual value of Chrysler vehicles for our customers. Fleet sales were down 81 percent for January compared to the same time last year.

Okay, so there's hardly any spin...

Full sales figures after the jump.

Wrangler sales are up for the same reason I'm trying to talk my wife into shopping for one this weekend. For the first time ever ever ever Jeep is putting a significant discount on Wranglers.

Before now, they'd offer $85,000 off Grand Cherokees and Liberties, twice that off of Commanders but for the Wrangler their incentive was a can of Coke provided you were willing to give them $.50 for the vending machine.

I looked around the web to find the best deal on a 2009 Rubicon equiped with the options I want (that was no easy task because of how poorly the jeep web sights function ) . Then I went to the dealer to see what the REAL cost would be. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the actual cost was less then what I found on the web. I bought the car How can you beat 0.0% 48 month financing, employee pricing, return customer discount... I am sorry for the people being hurt by the economy. But, this worked out great for me for a change! No way I could get this kind of a deal in the past. The only thing that could have been better is if the Rubicon had a V8 (with a manual transmission). But, I figure that is never going to happen, So, now is the time to buy.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record: Does anyone know the break down of wrangler 2 door sales as opposed to wrangle 4 door? I'm just curious if the 4 door wrangler is pretty much a replacement for the discontinued cherokee? (I think the patriot/liberty work into that picture somehow.)

So when is the Compass officially getting whacked? 800 sales in a MONTH?

The other interesting thing is that the "Original 3" before expanding the brand are the 3 that sold the most this month.
