I'm looking seriously to replace my present 4 wheel truck, and a diesel jeep would be VERY attractive. Wonder how long we'll have to wait.

my opinion on the whole hummer and Jeep is this ...

I own my own wrangler TJ and I absolutely love it. Hummer to me is the "new" military vehical, which is fine and all ... but Jeep has earned the American symbol for the car that saved our soldiers in WWII. Jeep is more affordable, more fun, a classic, and has its own loyal followers like harley does. Hummer is huge, expensive, a copy cat, and a car that rich business owners with nothing better to do with their money go and get. You can't say that you get the same kind of respect and feeling of being part of something that you do from wrangler, nor can hummer owners drive into the sunset with no top or doors playing their favorite CD waving to the jeep that passes you ... then tearing up the trails behind your house :)

Jeep is a way of life ... hummer will never match up ...

Diesel Wrangler sounds great, lets hope DC pulls out the mercedes 2.7 litre or the mitsubishi 3.2 litre, both have plenty of horsepower and torque.

There's a video out on the Net where an XJ beats the crap out of an H2 up the side of a mountain. If I remember correctly, the H2 flips.

Imagine what a Wrangler Rubicon can do.

I've been looking for pics of the new Liberty but can't find any. DC has really been keeping it "under wraps".

I'd only trade my XJ in for a Dakar. Too bad they never produced it for the general public. I do like the Unlimited but my TJ has caused me to loose too many nerve cells in my ears already. Since I live in the Pacific Northwest, the convertable is not used too much so I wouldn't mind a streched Wrangler with a full metal body even if it was just a 2-door.

The Diesel enhine would just expand on the already great jeep brand. It would increase the off-road capaility. My jeep stalls when it gets to wet and I am stuck putting new spark plugs in in the middle of a 2 foot river. Also in my area, diesel is about 4 or 5 cents cheaper than regular unleaded gas.

A H2 is nothing more than a GM truck chassis with some gawdy cladding. People will never realize this or care because people who buy H2's are not interrested in what their vehicle can actually do off-road, they are just looking for another image vehicle. They are NO competition for a TJ, period.

I can't figure out why DC has taken sooooo long to start expanding on the TJ. The design intent of the original Jeep was for it to be flexible and adaptable, guess they forgot this! The design is so basic that modification are easy and cheap, duh! It's a sinple rolling chassis that you can put any body on, like the Dakar... hint hint DC!

The diesel is nice but diesel prices in my area are around the same as premium gas, if not more. I'll keep my 87 octane running 4.0 thank you.

The only real Hummer is the H1, but considering the initial cost and repair costs who, other than rich yuppies, can afford to own and maintain one. And BTW H1's are designed to be disposable, when something major fails the government crushes them like a tin can and throws them away.

Yeah - competition is a good thing. I think that if there was no competition, you'd have a Wrangler, Liberty and G. Cherokee with no visions of the Rescue, Unlimited and probably no Rubicon. I would like to see a smaller version - or "bare bones" version - of the Rescue. It looks like the current one will be out of my price range.

In the 60s there was competition between the CJ, Bronco and International Harvester but it was a very small market. Now that the market has opened up, hopefully there will be tons of vehicles to choose from and hopefully Jeep will step up to the plate.

For years, I've been wondering why they haven't based more vehicles of the Wrangler/CJ design. Finally they are doing something. Hopefully, it will translate to their show room floor. A diesel will be a good option too.

Here's what I don't get... The Jeep and the Hummer were both developed by the same company, they're more brothers than adversaries if you track their heritage. Both of the consumer versions of these vehicles are all "weakened" for the consumer market. The H1 is really the only tank outta the group. The exact things that the rescue was critized for having "stolen" from Hummer, were things the Wrangler has been doing since it's inception 50 some-odd years ago, when the Hummer was still a twinkle in American Motor's eye. They say the Jeep line has "sold out" and made cars that can do barely anything of what a Hummer can, but then again, your cheapest Hummer is still 20K more than a Grand Cherokee. When the H3 comes out, and people see that it is nothing more than a Suburban with a new shell, they will realize that Hummer is no miracle car company the magazines think it is.

It will be the H3 vs. Grand Cherokee that I think will be the test for these two companies, because they both will be in the same class and price range.

The Hummer H2 is a piece of shit... A very expensive Chevy box... We off road comp. here in michigan and i saw an h2 get stuck in a trench will a Cj scooted right through... The h2 was pulled out by a land rover... I bet the guy felt like he had a rice burner... moral of the story h1 was an army vehicle the H2 is for 20" rims not off roading... Buy a jeep...Diesel jeep Rescue wll worth the money... I do also like the Bronco diesel concept because the 100 shot of nos from the factory was an awesome idea

The 4 cyl. deisel with 265 ft/lbs of torque planned for the liberty wouldn't be a bad idea... speaking of, has anyone heard of the release date of the deisel model or seen pictures of the redesign of the liberty renegade that is (or was) due out in april?
