Concept/DemonstrationWillys2 and Compass Ready for Production?

A long-time reader of mike's totally free jeep news sent us a link to an article on WardsAuto.com regarding the next few years of Jeep development. The article seems to point at both the Compass and Willys2 concept vehicles (or some varient thereof) going into production during the 2004-2007 model year timeframe. The article also mentions expanding the Jeep linuep on the high-end as well. Here's a snippet:

DaimlerChrysler Corp. has aggressive expansion plans for the Jeep brand for the ’04-’07 model years, including two entry-level products and a high-end Grand Cherokee variant, with thfirst of the affordable Jeeps expected to debut next year.

DaimlerChrysler Corp. has aggressive expansion plans for the Jeep brand for the ’04-’07 model years, including two entry-level products and a high-end Grand Cherokee variant, with the first of the affordable Jeeps expected to debut next year.
The strategy is to grow the brand among young buyers who seek Jeep status for safety and security -- as well as those whose lifestyles take them off-road.

“One entry level is not enough,” says Richard O. Schaum, Chrysler Group head of product development, quality and passenger car operations. “I’m convinced you need two.”

The Chrysler Group showed some of its intent at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January with the Jeep Compass and Willys2 (successor to Willys shown in 2001) concepts.

Easiest to put into production is the Compass as an entry-level Liberty off the compact SUV platform. The Liberty is assembled in the new Toledo, OH, plant, a facility designed to accommodate a second product. Like Liberty, a production version of the 2-door Compass would be more on-road oriented, equipped to offer a car-like ride with 4X4 capability but not necessarily Rubicon toughness.

Compass has the same appointments as Liberty, but addresses affordability. “That is basically a 2-door Liberty, so we’re paying less for two doors and its significantly lower greenhouse,” says Trevor Creed, senior vice president-design. “So we don’t have as much glass and sheet metal and weight as a Liberty.” Creed says the Willys2 concept also is entry level, “but at the different end of the spectrum” in its minimalist design.

Willys2 did not come off the Wrangler platform, but heralds “a new and unique architecture,” says Creed. “The Wrangler platform is so old and so outdated it doesn’t meet any of the upcoming requirements for FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard) for front and rear impact, so there would be no point in going to all that trouble,” explains Creed.
But the next-generation Wrangler could come off the Willys2 platform, Creed says, without confirming it will.

“Willys2 has features that could be incorporated into a Wrangler derivative, says Jim Schroer, executive vice president-global sales and marketing.

All three executives are careful not to show Jeep’s full hand. “We are only just beginning to conceive the next-generation Wrangler. Whatever we do with that Wrangler, it has to be as capable as the current Wrangler, which the Willys certainly does not have to be,” Creed cautions.

The article says that either the Compass or the Willys2 can be a $14,000 vehicle, in hopes of getting buyers hooked on the Jeep brand early. Be sure to read the entire article, as it contains further information on the future of the Wrangler as well as some other interesting details.

man these DC idiots dont know jack if they think the future of jeep culture is rally cars. i for one hate those things, with there IFS and getting stuck on speed bumps (yes iv seen a low car get stuck on a speed bump) on the other hand, i like the idea of the fully recycleable Willys though. jeep has always been a leader in the auto industry and i think this is another good place to start up. if any shmuck exec from DC is reading this then heres my advice: "if it aint broke dont fix it" sorry, i cant translate it into german for you because i dont speak nazi.

Where do they get this FMVSS junk from... I'll ride in my Wrangler any where, any weather, any time and be safer than anything on the road. I truly dont believe that the Wrangler would ever have any problems meeting any saftey standards. The spare mounted on the tailgate alone is enough to protect me (not to mention the tub design of the body). Integrate the rollbar to the body and frame to form a full rollcage, strengthen the body tub, and even inegrate the frame to the body like the Liberty if you must, but leave the basic Wrangler design alone.

I also agree that if Jeep needs to introduce 2 more Jeep models, they should be the DAKAR and an updated version of the Scrambler.

If DC needs to redesign the Wrangler, then they should make a modular design which can support these 3 different body styles (like the HUMMER)

Last comment.. I dont mind the Willys2 concept, I almost like it IF it doesn't mean giving up the real Wrangler...Heck.. a little silicone cauk and an outboard motor, and the Willys2 could be the next SEEP amphibian

It more has to do with a lifestyle and aspirations and emotions of a Jeep owner. Certainly it’s someone who would like to stand out, be different, active lifestyle, all the emotions that go along with those people.”

So Jeep just means styling cues to the boys in the front office now? Hey, guys, forget all the "lifestyle" babble from the focus groups and off-sites and try this: Jeep owners just want a simple, reliable vehicle to bang around in. That's it. Nothing complicated about it. Now go back to the drawing board and do it right.

Here is my $.02,

Whoever made the following statement must be either smoking crack, brain dead, or both!

""Willys2 did not come off the Wrangler platform, but heralds “a new and unique architecture,” says Creed. “The Wrangler platform is so old and so outdated it doesn’t meet any of the upcoming requirements for FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard) for front and rear impact, so there would be no point in going to all that trouble,” explains Creed.

Give me a break, "upcoming FMVSS safety standards", i guess all the lite trucks on the road will be outlawed as well... Correct me if i'm wrong, but a jeep is BASICALLY a truck frame with a different tub on it!

Nothing is even mentioned about side impact safety standards... IMHO this is an open Jeeps most vulnerable side. This would be a reason to change the design a little, dare i say a little more enclosedto meet "safety standards". Sounds like a bad, CORPORATE, excuse to get rid of the open Jeep. DC will soon succeed in killing a great vehicle.

Hmmm... what's next for the FMVSS, motor cycles?

instead build a "retro" ......modern
interpretation of the JEEP CJ7 ...make the
front grill longer and narrow like the CJ5 &
7..... not smusched and wide like the Liberty,
Jeepster, Compac, ect......screw the
Wrangler..........bring back the CJ !!!!! Also build
a 4 door version of this new CJ....... like a

You know I read all this stuff about Jeep wanting to hit a broader market-come back out with a dam pickup! They can base it on the Liberty, Grand Cherokee or the Wrangler-but they need a pickup period! My commanche is getting wore out, and it is due for a rebuild this spring-i'd be in the market for a truck-and not the corny dakota....

I have no idea where the Jeep brand and its products are going to be in ten
years. DC is either going to totally ruin the whole thing like, Griff and Dillinger
seem to think or they are going to take the brand boldly into the 21st century.
I have felt for some time that the brand should be expanded and for that reason the Cherokee should have remained in production. The idea of adding
vehicles to the line like the Compass and the Willy's 2 is fine with me. Even though neither of them really appeal to me they will find new enthusiast that
will keep the Jeep brand growing while at the same time bringing in younger
enthusiast. I don't know how the rest of the readers on this page feel about
the Dodge M-80 concept truck from the Detroit auto show, but that thing is
crying out for a seven slot grill and trapezoidal wheel arches. The current grill
with its outline, round headlights and turn signal location in only missing the
seven slots. Throw some Cherokee tail lights on the back you have the next
Commanche pickup.

nah, motorcycles have been ruined by the same 18-year old punks on CBR's and Ninjas, with $4000+ insurance premiums.

Since when is a Z28 a "real" sports car? *laughing*

Everybody needs to chill out a bit! Wow.

First, I just love the bigmouths that spew opinions like geese spew feces! I mean, let's at least see more info before we decide that DC is killing the Jeep Brand.

Remember, this is a business. If enough people wanted and actually bought rugged off-road vehicles, then that is what would be produced. Unfortunately, the entire SUV market has grown beyond the CJ and Scrambler.

Secondly, lawyers have destroyed most fun vehicles. Anybody try to insure a real sports car? You can't. It is very cost prohibitive. However, when I was younger, I owned a Z28, then a Daytona Shelby, etc. These days, young kids cannot afford real sports cars.

The same has happened to the SUV. Look, they forced half doors on the Wrangler. They tried to kill the Suzuki Samari with "rollover" statistics. They even tried to do it with the Liberty! The auto companies are running scared because of the lawsuits. Sorry, but side impact is something that every car company is vulnerable on. Jeep has to protect itself or it will be out of business forever.

Motorcycles will be targeted. Don't worry. Once the liberals jerks get through destroying the SUV, they will move on and get anything that has fun associated with it. Remember, they want all of us to drive sardine cans powered by the sun.

I am all for Jeep expading it's product base, but they must keep the main ideology of JEEP...rugged, reliable, dependable vehicles. I have owned a CJ-7, a '94 Wrangler and now a 2002 Liberty. All of these trucks have been and are top quality. Granted the Grand Cherokees and the Liberties are a bit more scaled up from the Wrangler, but they still can out perform the majority of SUVs on the market. The Wrangler should be left alone though. It has undergone some changes over the years, but it should always be a basic, bang-around, take the top off, cruise the beach or hit the trails vehicle. If the Wrangler ever goes soft....then Jeep has sold out.

I for one, as a young family man (wife and kids, that's why I had to sell the '94 Wrangler and get a Liberty....not a bad trade-off) and a Jeep enthusiast would welcome the Compass or the Willys, as long as they don't mess with the Grand Cherokee, Liberty and the Wrangler. If I had to buy a smaller vehicle, I would much rather buy the 2 door Jeep Compass, than some pansy ass Honda.

Let's just hope DC doesn't f-uck the Jeep products up too much.

Long Live Jeep

TO SEAN M

Look, I'd be the first to die defending your right to your opinion. What I meant was that too many people are condemning a vehicle we know almost nothing about!

I have opinions as well. I expressed those in the post above regarding lawyers and how they have destroyed most of the "fun" vehicles out there.

Please do not think I want you to shut up. I just know that Jeep is our last hope for decent off-road vehicles and if we attack them for a product not yet released, they will never listen to us.

Motorcycles are already ruined by the once hippy love children, now FAT ASS YUPPIES! driving their Harleys, thinking their outlaws, generation.

What gets me is how safety regulations can kill the Wrangler, yet sub-compact cars are the future... Lawyers SUCK!! Oh sorry i'm expressing my opinion again.

I agree with Ward. A lot (but not all) Jeep
owners want a basic fun vehicle. That's what I
wanted and I got it with my Wrangler. Some
Jeep owners want all the bells and whistles
like leather, power everything, car-like ride,
and complicated gizmos and doodads. Fine,
let them buy the Grand Cherokees and
Libertys. But leave the Wrangler for the rest of
us. C'mon guys, don't wreck a good thing.
