LibertyStong Jeep Liberty Sales Prompt Production Increase

Sales results for the month of July are in, and sales of the new Jeep Liberty are looking very strong. According to DaimlerChrysler, a total of 10,562 units were sold in July, compared with 8,884 in the month of June. The brisk sales of the Liberty have reportadly prompted DaimlerChrysler to increase this year's production run of the Liberty by 60,000 vehicles. Here's a look at Jeep's sales for the past month:

DaimlerChrysler Corporation U.S. Sales Summary, Thru July 2001 Month Sales DR % Sales CYTD DR % Model Curr Pr Change Curr Pr Change Yr Yr Yr Yr Wrangler                      6068    8128   -25%    42871    55557  -23%
    Cherokee                      6208    9550   -35%    66793    80556  -17%
    Liberty                      10562       0     0%    21048        0    0%
    Grand Cherokee               18627   24610   -24%   126158   157010  -20%
    JEEP BRAND                   41465   42288    -2%   256870   293123  -12%

As is evident from the data, sales of all Jeeps, except for the Liberty were down when compared with the same period last year. This is right in line with the 9% downward national trend of all U.S. automakers. See this article for information about U.S. auto sales for the month of July. Here's a snippet from the DaimlerChrysler press release regarding the Liberty's sales:

Jeep® Liberty sales remain strong, selling 10,562 units in July, up 24 percent compared to last month when there were 8,884 sales. ``As production and dealer inventories increase, we look for even stronger Jeep Liberty sales,'' added Gary Dilts, Senior Vice President - Sales. ``Customers are telling us they like Jeep Liberty's versatility and its bold styling.''

For the Chrysler's group complete sales numbers, check out this article.

In related news, the Jeep Grand Cherokee continued to be one of the top 20 best selling vehicles in the month of July, appearing in the 14th spot. This is a drop of 2 places from July, 2000. As usual, the top spot was occupied by the Ford F-Series Pickup. Here's the complete list.

Finally today, we've received a reader report that DaimlerChrysler will be announcing its prices for the 2002 Wrangler on Friday, August 3, with production scheduled to begin on August 6.

I wish there was some way to break down those sales figures by region. I'd love to know where in the world the Liberty is selling. I live in a mega population center (San Francisco Bay Area) and have only seen two of them on the street, which, coincidently, is the same number of Ford Escapes I've seen. Of course, the problem is that unless I see the Liberty from the front it can be mistaken for any number of other wagons.

Isn't it strange that when actual sales figures for the Liberty are released there
are no comments from Jeeps core enthusiast, purest or what ever you want to
call them. Wait until they start delivering the thousands that have been ordered. As the newest Jeep I can only say " I'am here, I'am queer, deal with
it ! ".

I just got my copy of JP magazine and they test
drive the Liberty and give it pretty good
reviews, then they go on to blast the
competition.... they do say the Xterra is a
contender, but lacks power and is based on
the Frontier which doesn't have a great
off-road reputation..... but then I got my
Motortrend in the mail, and they also tested
the Liberty against a number of other vehicles,
they said the Frontier Crew Cab & Liberty were
the only two vehicles to handle all of the off
road tests. They said they expected it from
Jeep and felt the Liberty lived up to the name,
but were blown away by the capabilities of the
Frontier Crew cab...... this is great news for
anyone who hates the Liberty's styling and is
considering a new Supercharged Xterra!

No K.J. it is not srange. There is nothing particularly great about those numbers, especially considering a new vehicle typically has more interest when its first released. Even if you annualized those numbers, it is still far less that what the XJ averaged anually through the '90's. But, I shouldnt compare the two, it's apples and oranges.

From everything I've read on the new supercharged
Nissan (Frontier & Xterra), it seems like only a
moderate improvement over the old engine. And to
top it off, it requires premium gas.

Jeeps are still designed by americans in america, Bob. The whole Jeep has
abandoned me crying game by so many people who claim to be Jeep fans
or JEEPERS is pathetic. These people , Bob included always seem to end with
the statement on how they are going to buy a Land Rover or a Toyota or a
Nissan for god sakes. Heres my advice to you people, Go for it , who needs
you, certainly not the Jeep hobby. For everyone of you clowns who jumps ship
the Jeep hobby will gain five Liberty owners. And market research has shown
that those Liberty owners are smarter, better informed and more affluent. We
all live in America ,which means we all have freedom of choice and it sounds to
me that you have made your choice Bob. You can hardly wait for the new
X-terra, well me to because the sooner that Jeep wannabe shows up the sooner
you are outta here.

are built in the United States, Nissans are
built in the United States, What's the difference
at this point? NOTHING, except Germany's
vision for the future of Jeep SUCKS!!! Go

OK Bob, how in the hell do you figure that Nissan is more American than Jeep ?
Its a Japanese company, headquartered in Japan and owned by a French (like
they ever built a real car or truck) company, Renault. The only similarity is that
Renault is funding Nissan's new products in much the same way the bankrolled
AMC after that buyout. We all know what a success that was.

Here is my comment:

You people need to do some reading. Or try
watching this week's Motortrend on
Speedvision for instance, then you'll see if the
Liberty is really better then a SC Xterra, they
said on Speedvision that the Frontier SC
engine was the only one that didn't lose
substancial power in the high altitudes, and
the Liberty lagged because of loss of power
and the new vehicles weight! Kill Jeep like DC
killed the Cherokee and Dakar concept!!!
Thank god for Nissan, now more of an
American company then Jeep itself!

here is my comment: They are starting to run commercials for the supercharged X-terra. It has 210 horsepower, the same as the normally aspirated Jeep 3.7 liter found in the LIberty. I guess Nissan is playing catch-up. LONG LIVE JEEP!
