Jeep February Sales Report
Chrysler Group reported U.S. sales of 178,642 units in February, 2002, an 11 percent decrease compared to last year, the fourth highest February in Company history (201,636 units). Retail sales were comparable to a year ago, but overall sales
declined due to lower fleet orders -- especially daily rental units.

Total sales for the month increased 27 percent over January, 2002, when measured on a daily selling rate.

"Our lineup of modern new products, like the all-new 2002 Dodge Ram and Jeep(R) Liberty, continue to gain momentum in a highly competitive marketplace," said Gary Dilts, senior vice president - Sales. "Given the fact that last February was one of the best in our history, this month's retail sales figures show that hot products and clear brand identities, along with a strategic incentive plan, can help fuel sales in a very competitive environment."

Total sales of Dodge Ram were 32,253 units, up 19 percent, compared to February, 2001. February was the third consecutive month that Ram truck sales have been up. Sales of the all-new 2002 Dodge Ram truck were 25,749 units, up 35 percent from last month.

"Dodge Ram's bold, in-your-face styling has been well received by consumers and dealers alike," added Dilts. "Each month, sales continue to climb as truck buyers recognize the capability, performance and styling advantages of the new Ram."

Jeep Liberty sales were 11,466 units, an increase of 10 percent from last month.

"This is further concrete evidence that no matter what the competitive conditions, Jeep Liberty is a true success in the market, even without incentives," said Dilts.

Here's a breakdown of February's Jeep sales figures:

What you have to remember is that those sales figures of the Cherokee are a little misleading. Last year at this time, there was no recession, and BIG discounts and incentives on the Cherokee (the $2000 Sport value package at no charge). This year, we are in a recession, and ALL auto makers are offering big rebates and 0% financing. Jeep is offering big incentives on Wrangler and Grand Cherokee, as well as 0% financing. They are NOT offering either of these on the Liberty, and it is still outselling the Cherokee's 2001 sales figures. I would say it is a hit. And from a business standpoint, what automaker doesn't sell vehicles they make lots of money on? They made far more profit on the Cherokee than they do on the Liberty. Most of the tooling for the XJ was paid for in the 80's! For any company to survive, they have to make a large profit per vehicle, because of the peripheral costs such as the dealership network, advertising, and warranty service. Just as a for-instance, I'm a big fly-fisherman. I have a fly reel that I paid $235 for. It is probably only worth half that. However, as with most high-end fly tackle, it comes with a lifetime warranty. The manufacturer has to charge more to offer that. We can't expect Jeep to make a 10% profit per vehicle, and survive as a company. It's simple economics.

Guys...I would agree with both of you. I as well remain so happy that I bought my 2000 Cherokee sport at a great deal with low financing before the Liberty came out.

But, when looking at the sales figures...and comparing Liberty sales this year to Cherokee figures last year...it is fairly apparent that all DC has done is trade Cherokee sales for Liberty sales.

Now...unless they are making tons of money on the LIberty that they were not making on the Cherokee....then it looks like they have gained nothing!

And even if they are making lots of money on the Liberty....why would you want to buy one that makes them lots of money? I'd rather buy a vehicle that saves ME lots of money.

Anyway...Just my observations for what there worth.

Left unsaid in the discussion of these figures is the extent to which "top-of-the-line" Liberty sales may be cannibalizing "low-end" Grand Cherokee Laredo sales. I know that switch is one we will seriously consider when the lease on my wife's Laredo expires. At the same time, I have yet to see any evidence suggesting that former Cherokee customers will rush to purchase a Liberty when replacement time arrives. I remain thankful that I bought a 2000 Cherokee for my around-town use AND (more importantly) for off-roading. I love my Cherokee, would never consider replacing it with a Liberty, and plan to keep it until one of us drops from old age!

Matt, I don't disagree at all with your comments re deep discounts for Jeeps other than the Liberty. I have no doubt that the Liberty's Jeep-connection has and will continue to attract customers from other companies that produce for the Sport-Cute market and former Cherokee owners whose idea of off-roading is driving on the dirt road to a picnic table in the park! My speculation re cannibalization was based on what we are considering when the current lease expires and on the significant decline in Grand Cherokee sales in spite of deep-discount inducements. And, like many, I wonder whether some other manufacturer will jump in and fill the off-roader market vacated by Jeep when they abandoned the Cherokee. A down-scale and affordable Hummer springs to mind. Overall, however, I suspect the Liberty will be a winner for DC. Ultimately, it is all speculation and serves mostly to get me through the last dying gasps of Winter in Southern Ontario!

And in agreeing with your logic....I'd say all those sales must be the fickle type that'll jump ship when Toyota (or insert manufacturer here) comes to market with another trendy vehicle...

The Libby won't be able to hold onto Jeep brand customers like the Cherokee did. Basically, it's only a matter of time before the general public figures out what long time Jeepers already know....

It's a copy of a copy of a real jeep.
