More Tidbits about the Commander

Notes about the Commander and low end Jeep
A couple of web sites have some tidbits about the forthcoming Jeep Commander and low-end Jeep. First up, from Forbes.com: Coming this fall is the Jeep Commander, with three rows of seats (finally). The Commander is a slightly stretched offshoot of the recently introduced Grand Cherokee. Sometime next year, probably by spring, comes a Neon small car replacement (renamed, too). Also due in 2006 from the same architecture is a small, less-expensive Jeep, and (we hear) a version of this vehicle for Dodge dealers. But it will be later in calendar 2006 before we know if those are winners. Here's the link to the entire article. The Toledo Blade is running an ariticle about the Dodge Nitro (based on the Liberty platform) - the end of the article mentions the future Jeeps: The Toledo-born Jeep brand is in the midst of broadening its appeal, starting on the high end later this year with the seven-passenger Jeep Commander to be built in Detroit with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Dodge Neon plant in Belvidere, Ill., is expected to start building two entry-level Jeep models next year, with a combined volume of about 75,000 units annually, Ms. Lindland said. Both will be more car-like than existing Jeeps and aim to attract young buyers who have defected to brands like Toyota Scion, she said. Here's the link.

And I don't believe WJs came in pink on 2002 expect maybe on Barbie's TJ... you can afford that right? Just keep digging the hole web wheeler.

Not a day goes by where people on here are not continually complaining that Jeeps are becoming watered down. This maybe true, but what about the owners. As much as Jeep are to be tough, the same standard should be held to their owners. What happened to the brotherhood that existed between Jeep owners? All we see, included those outside of the Jeep community, is a bunch web wheelers who criticize everything about the company and fellow owners. Whether it's their choice of jeep, its design, its uses, or typing error.... who gives a f***. Why are you so interested to dictating to others what they should think, like, or drive? And why do you think your knowledge of marketing and/ or engineering are so far superior to that of DCX? Life would be pretty boring if everyone was homogenized. Jeep can't be everything to everyone; it never has, and it never will. What Jeep has done is made vehicles that stand out in their individual classes. No other midsize SUV has the offroad ability, agility, and power as the WK for its price. Sure it could look better and offer a SFA, but it is the best in its class. No other small SUV can tow 5000lbs, offer two 4wd options, and travel offroad like a KJ. Yes, it was sad to see the XJ go, but it was ~17 yrs old. It was time to progress. Its been gone for 4 yrs.... time to move on. And no other SUV is a true no frilles top offroader out of the box with a warranty like a TJ. You can keep quoting Jeep mantras all day long, but don't forget the true offroad Jeeps are built. Jeep will always built a trail ready vehicle, but it will now be built along side profitable vehicles that 99% of the rest of consumers want. Besides, in the end it's just a car.... so chill out.

They won't even take a deposit on one. One of the reasons I liked the Gladiator so much is that it gets decent fuel mileage with a diesel, plus the fact that it sounds like it would be a hard-core 4wd vehicle, not a wimpmobile with AWD and soft cushy insides to get ripped, dirty and torn. My next vehicle is going to get better fuel mileage than my XJ! I paid $2.19 for my last fillup of unleaded. In Death Valley I heard it cost $3.25.

Originally posted by: Jon I still don't get it, other than the the 17 year old XJ being discontinued and replaced with the Liberty that some don't like but is still best in its class what has Jeep done or not done that some think the "good ol' days" of Jeep are over with?? For the last 15 years they have only had three basic models. The new Grand is far better than the 93 Grand. The new Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon is far better than a 93 Wrangler. The Liberty may not of been the replacement vehicle that some wanted for the Cherokee but I believe the only ones that really a care are a few select former XJ fans. There are still plenty of good used ones out there. I had a XJ and loved it but I am excited to see all the new products on the horizon. The Commander will fill a niche for Jeep. I don't know why some feel so threatened by an entry level Jeep when DC has committed to continue building the Wrangler. We are even going to finally get a four-door Wrangler and mayber a truck. How can all of this mean the end of Jeep?? To be honest, if Jeep was still making the Cherokee based on a 1984 platform and had no plans to update and change the Wrangler I would be very worried. The market has changed since the 1980's and the general auto consumer demands a lot more and expects a lot more than they did 15 years ago. I only see good things for Jeep in the next few years.

When I graduated college, the Jeep was M.S.R.P. arount $10,000, now the base price has nearly doubled to nearly $20,000 (before incentives and dealer discounts).
Toyota has a good thing going with it's Scion brand. While I don't agree that the new vehicles should be called 'Jeep', I agree that they need to be built for young buyers who's main priority for purchasing a car is price.
Mabye Jeep/Chrusler/Daimler should create a youth-oriented brand like Scion. The Eagle or Willys name could be used again, or the 'Scout' could be an entire youth-oriented division, not just the name of a single vehicle.
As far as the Commander, Jeep needs a big vehicle like this. We are looking at a Yukon/Tahoe sized vehicle and the Commander fits the bill.
As far as mileage is concerned, yeah, the Commander will not get great mileage, but I am sure the Hemi with M.D.S. can at least match the mileage of the Tahoe, if not beat it...Remember, the Hemi is slated for a hybrid system around 2007, which is co-developed with GM, this should improve mileage to a respectable number.
Don't get me wrong, I think ALL vehicles should at least have engine-stopping capability at the very minimum as well as some type of cylinder deactivation.
Large vehicles are a necessary evil of today's regulated society...Why should a large family pay $30,000 for a 10 passenger van, and pay another $15,000 to a conversion van builder to make the van half-way liveable, and another $20,000 to a conversion outfit like Quigley 4X4 if they want 4 Wheel Drive?
How is a family of 5 or more (mom, pop, bro, sis, and baby, don't forget Rover, Fluffy and the mother-in-law) going to fit in a Prius sized vehicle, especially if the children are all under 100 lbs, and they must use a booster seat system as mandated by law? 3 booster seats will not fit in the rear seat.
If your spouse divorces you, and you get every other weekend with your 3 kids, and your new spouse has his/her 3 kids every other weekend, where are you going to put six kids plus yourselves?
The point is, like it or not, large SUV's like the Commander, and small entry level vehicles must be built, and Jeep should not miss out on the market.

Besides, I recognize that Jeep is trying to broaden their product line. I was merely stating that it would probably be more effective under a nameplate that has offered AWD vehicles in the past with the advantage that you would not have a mixing of brand identity. In addition, DC would be able to grab a foothold on some of Suburu's territory without having to bring Jeep there.

In addition, all of these soft-roaders fit everything the Eagle brand ever stood for. The new GC, KJ, and the upcoming Commander are all necassary evolutions within the Jeep linup, but I dont think the soft-roaders uphold the Jeep nameplate heritage.

I do agree that DCX has a buisness to run, and that the commander and a "sissy" jeep would be good $$makers for DCX. However, i also dont want to see IFS on the wrangler. Here's what my middle ground would be: Take the current wrangler segment of the market, and split it in two. Make one vehicle for the yuppies/kids who want a cool convertible, and make another vehicle for those of us who actually go off road. By building one vehicle to cater to the segment jeep has lost to scion and one as a true offroader, jeep will please both us and those who need to see profits
