WranglerNo more 3.7L engines for Wranglers?
Posted by mike on 2005/6/5 23:00:00 (1514) reads

One of our readers reports that 4.0L will be the minimum size.

One of our readers recently emailed us and passed along some information about the engine selections coming in the all-new 2007 Wranglers. Here's what he has to say:

The '07 Wrangler will NOT use the 3.7L V-6 engine. Jeep understands the great value when owners mention that "it has a 4.0L in it."

The engine slated for the next generation Wrangler will be a modified version of the 3.7L V-6...it's displacement will be increased to 4.0L using more stroke (increased torque) and slightly larger pistons.

DCX has promised over $300 million to upgrade the engine plant in Trenton, MI. Over $155 million of this money will be used to prepare the plant to build the new 4.0L V-6 engine.

Jeep Liberty CRD in Green Magazine

The Diesel Jeep Liberty has an article about it in GreenCar.com - one of the premier alternate-fuels vehicles magazine. Here's a snippet:

Bring up the subject of emissions regulations with Jeep executives or engineers and the frustrations brooding beneath the surface come through. One senior-level manager shared his exasperation that California in particular – with high-quality diesel fuel already available and a seemingly arbitrary emissions cutoff point for diesel passenger vehicles in place – would effectively deny new car buyers a highly-efficient alternative to the gasoline-powered mid-size SUV.

I'm an all Jeep family, and the grand is about as water down as I can stand but makes a good familymobile.

I agree the Commander is sure to be a flop because it's a ugly mom-mobile.

Jeep is on target with the Gladiator and extending that look to the new Wrangler in both a two and four door with big block gas and diesel will win big with Rubicon offroad capablity.

This is PURE BS!! The Liberty by no means in the same class as the C.R.V., Rav4 and Escape. These are all based on car chasis and don't even have a low range t-case. The Liberty is much closer to a Cherokee than any of those "cars". Just because the Liberty has IFS doesn't mean it is not an off road vehicle. Is the IFS as good as the SFA, maybe not, but that does not make it a soft roader. I am sick of people who know very little about the capabilities of the KJ make these kind of statments just because they don't like IFS or don't like the styling Jeep chose. I have owned many model of Jeeps over the years and I am quite happy with my KJ both on and off the road, it has been places that a C.R.V., Rav4 and Escape owner can only dream of going!

I am starting to think that DCX will never listen to it's fans...they still put out a decent product, but it's never what we truly want. Oh well, like they say, real jeeps are built not bought...so i guess the next wrangler i buy, i'll just haul out the engine and put a diesel in it myself, seeing as DCX won't do it. Hmm..I wonder if I could get a Cummins to fit in there :-) J/K

And who's the mastermind at DC/Jeep that thinks they can just slap a 4.0 sticker on the side of the new Wrangler to win over the hearts of the diehard 4.0 lovers? Fool. The engines are night and day from each other...the only thing common between them would be the 4.0 naming. Jeep, don't p!ss on my back and say it's raining.

Why go through the expense of "hot rodding" the 3.7 when they could just drop the Hemi in and be done with it? In my opinion a (detuned) Hemi and a small Diesel would be sweet engine options for the new Wrangler.

I think Jeeps best days are ahead.

Over the next few years-
New Commander, GC SRT, Wrangler 2dr & 4dr and truck, 2 different entry level vehicles (Compass and ?) and then a totally redesigned Liberty.

If you can find a vehicle that suits you with all of these then switch brands.

Like the others I'd like to see the Diesel offered. Like someone said, that is what the hard core folks will want. As we all know, DC already makes a perfectly good 4.0 that works great, so why spend all that money to revamp the 3.7? And, I'd just love to get a Gladiator with a D and manual tranny.

Yeah that is just plan stupid upgrading a 3.7L to 4.0L. The great part about the inline 6 was that it had a lot of low end power and never had to come much about 2000RPM during normal driving... a 4.0L V6 is going to be a nightmere gas hog with all the power in the high RPMS.... yeah, now we can drag mustangs... Might as well given the decreased emphasis on actual 4x4ing latley by DC

Which Diesel do you want in the Wrangler or Gladiator? 2.8 (Liberty)? 3.0 (Grand Cherokee-Europe)? 3.2(Mercedes)? 4.2 (Mercedes)?

Jeep has begun to lose their identity – they are chasing fads and have already begun to build what others already have.

Liberty…OK, call it a RAV4, Forester, or Escape...all the same. Sure DCX drew in non-Jeep customers but those people have no loyalty – this year a Jeep next year a Honda. At the same time they displaced countless Cherokee owners. Cherokee owners were Jeep owners, they were faithful, and most have owned other Jeeps.

Jeep Commander – a sure flop. Next they are planning to build an entry level Jeep that has front wheel drive…wow, I am excited. Maybe they can compete with Neons. What next…sedans, station wagons, mini vans…c’mon Jeep make them all.

My dream – that a company such as Ford, Toyota, etc. come out with something that will directly compete with the next generation Wrangler – and I hope they spank the new Wrangler bad. DCX are chasing money guys…they will sell WHATEVER makes a few bucks for their shareholders. RIP 4.0L engine…RIP Wrangler…RIP Jeep…….

The rumours on allpar.com say the 3.8l engine is an update of the iron pushrod engine found in the minivans. This will be used in the TK, not the 3.7l truck engine or the new 4.0l V6.

The 4.0l V6 is rumoured to be a more high tech high reving aluminum engine, not a low end torque monster. Not suitable for a Jeep or truck.

I want the diesel. In the gladiator. :)

Now that I think about it ... replacing the 3.7 with a 4.0 isn't a terrible idea AS LONG AS you do it across the board. Making the 4.0 V6 just for the wrangler would be silly, makeing the new 4.0 to replace all 3.7's doesn't sound all that crazy.

Still am more interested in getting the
D in all the jeeps.

i think it is a good idea to increase the displacement of the 3.7. the longer stroke will help its lower end torque. but more inportantly the same modifications can be made to the 4.7 and bump it up to a 5.3. incrasing the power in the 4.7 will close the gap between it and the HEMI and make it a more profitable engine.

So basically, DCX is thinking, "Let's make our 3.7 V6 a little bigger so that maybe jeepers won't notice we've phased out the I6 4.0" That's a silly idea to waste $300 million on.

DCX, if this is true, save youself $300 and just put the 3.7 V6 in the wrnagler. None of the die hard jeepers are gonna mind that you put the 3.7 in if you also put in the
D at the same cost.
