Overland has nothing to do off-roading. Overland is a name from Jeep's heritage.

There were no skid plates or 4WD systems offered in this vehicle.

Thank you for the history lesson. Now do you know anything about how to remove my foot from my mouth?

Even still, my personal preference would be to get more off-road equipment if I'm spending more money. I'm not so concerned about extra shinny mirrors or more chrome and wood trim. But again, that is just my preference.

It's okay... no need to stick your foot in your mouth. Many do not realize Jeep's heritage goes back before the Willy's MB. The Willy's MB is the start of the 4WD lineup that we all know and love today, but their history dates back much further.

In 1914 Willys was the number two automaker in the US, only surpassed by Ford.

The Overland name dates back to 1903, when the Overland Runabout debuted. The company carried the Overland name until 1953, when Kaiser bought the company.

Anyway, in my opinion the new "Overland" should be both top of the line luxury and top of the line off-road capability. This would make a nod to both the rich history of the name and the legendary off-road capability of Jeep. I would love to see it carry all the style upgrades, but also include thing like rock rails, an air suspension system (like that found on the Toureg or LR3), HID/LED lighting, and perhaps the option of the Mercedes diesel that can be found in the European version of the Grand Cherokee.

I'm usually pretty forgiving when it comes to Jeep trying new things, but this is completely retarded. Overland should be a base model 4x4 with standard off-road features. Skid plates optional??? This is a joke, right?

I should chill out. I'm sure some will buy it, but from what I'm hearing it's nto what I would ahve expected an "Overland" to be. Maybe they'll make an "Overtrail" Grand too

I'm not too impressed. IMHO the Grand Cherokee is way plush enough as it is, really the Grand has become a street jeep (even though it is "trail rated").

Why did the "automotive-nomenclature" "Overland" have to be come associated with fat cat overblown luxury? At one point in automotive history "Overland" was associated with tough people hauling rigs that did not really offer any excessive comfort, they were simply functional and functioned very well. I don't mean to undermine the Grand's off road prowess, it is quite capable as a trail rig, but who in their right mind would take a high dollar luxo rig over a hard core trail?

DCX....save the cool old nomenclature like "Overland" for the vehicles that are likely to go overland and give this rig a street name like SLS or GSL or some other acronym associated with luxury cruising.

Yes, the Overland is a fully loaded Limited. The Overland has just three options: skid plates, the rear entertainment system, and engine heater. But: still no signs of the availability of a Diesel engine for the U.S. market, or the Dynamic Handling System.

Can someone explain to me what the overland is?
I know that it is a trim level, but what are the major points?
(compare Limited to Overland)

 Re: Photos Of 2006 Overland
The Overland is the top trim level. It is nearly fully loaded. The WJ Overland featured upscale seats, a different grill, and rock rails. The WK Overland will feature upscale seats, a different grill, platinum accented mirrors, and other platinum accents.

I am disappointed that rock rails, air suspension, or LED lighting didn't show up on the Overland. Perhaps they will appear on the rumored "Overland" (may receive a different name) trim level of the Commander.
