Jeep Marketing VP doesn't give away much - other that something is coming

TheCarConnection.com is running a short blurb about the official introduction of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited - the long-wheelbased Wrangler that we've been writing about for awhile - where Chrysler Jeep Marketing VP Jeff Bell doesn't give up too much information that we haven't heard before. If you've been following along, you'll know that DaimlerChrysler seems desparate to expand the Jeep lineup from it's current 3 models. Rumors seem to be pointing to both a low- (Compass?) and high-end (Rescue?) Jeep in the near future. Here's a snippet:

It seems everything is under study these days as the Chrysler Group studies ways to add more models to its lineup, says Chrysler Jeep marketing VP Jeff Bell. "It's all about filling in the white spaces," he said at the introduction of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, a long-wheelbase version of the Wrangler coming to showrooms in the next few weeks. The $24,995 Unlimited has the same physical and demographic footprint as Jeep's last Cherokee, a vehicle that disappeared when Jeep added the more sophisticated Liberty SUV in 2002. As for the future models, Bell would not confirm any of the additional products coming to the Chrysler/Jeep lineup, but says the company is studying all the ways it can to bring more vehicles to market more quickly and more effectively.
Be sure to check out the entire article.

One thing that did take us by surprise was the fact that the article mentions that the Wrangler Unlimited has the same physical footprint at the Cherokee. Nice.

wishful thinking, it is soft offroaders with independent suspension, monocoque chassis and hard top that appeals to the majority of buyers, and that means dollars in the bank, unfortunately we are a small minority who love the virtues of the traditional Wrangler

here is my comment

If they ever replaced the Wrangler with a Liberty/Willys (concept) type vehicle, there'd be angry villagers with torches ready to destroy Daimler/Chrysler.

I expected that the Wrangler will be updated hopefully with minimal changes to the exterior, revamped interior (like a CJ {wishful thinking}) with the solid front and rear axle to not be changed.

So I noticed one thing in that article... I'm wondering if it's just a case of bad grammar or it's a freudian slip.

The author indicated that DC was looking at introducing a "replacement for the Wrangler" in a few years... Do they mean a "replacement Wrangler" - as in an updated version of the Jeep we all know and love or a "replacement for the Wrangler" like the Liberty replaced the Cherokee???

I've been driving the new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited for 2 weeks now and we love it so far. We are planning to put a locker in the front, 31 inch BF Goodrich MT tires on and a 2 inch lift, custom made bumpers in front and rear, and a winch soon. So far it's only gotten 13.87 mpg which isn't too good. We are heading to Colorado Jeeping in June from Pennsylvania so I'll let you know how it makes out. The ride is really smooth over bumps and its a lot quieter inside on the highway. We are curious to see how the automatic does on the trails. I know I'll feel more comfortable on the 3 point turns that have no room for error at 11-13,000 feet. We took out a 1984 Jeep last year, stick, that had me nervous with our rear tire on the edge of sudden death on those 3 point turns. No drifting back allowed on those trails.

I guess I'll keep my old scrambler as the new unlimited is only going to be offered with an automatic. I can't believe it.
