Cherokee'88 Cherokee Converted to 100% Electric
Posted by XJameson on 2007/4/19 6:45:38 (1356) reads

Found this interesting (and VERY thorough) website about a tired old '88 XJ (400k+ miles on two gas engines) being converted to a 100% electric vehicle. Very interesting, and a lot of great pictures!

So, for the Jeep conversion, I've decided to start off using flooded Lead Acids for my first pack simply because they are inexpensive and more tolerant of abuse then other battery chemistries. The main trade-off compared to AGMs (my second most likely choice) is that they won't provide the Jeep with race car performance or top speed. Also, they'll need to be cleaned and refilled frequently to ensure they have a long life. A fairly common brand of flooded lead-acid battery used in EVs is Trojan Batteries. This is the brand I've chosen to use as well. I'll be using the T-875 battery which has four cells for an 8 volt battery. However, this is no small battery, with dimensions of 10-3/8" x 7-1/8" x 10-7/8" and a weight of 63lbs! The goal is to have twenty of these for a total system voltage of 160 volts DC.

Maybe I am the only one that lives close to work, but my commute is about 12 miles round trip (including pick up at day care)

I understand that he might want to o 0 emissions....I would suggest to him that he invest in newer battery technology. Sure it will cost him a bit and I am sure that it will net him better life of the battery.

Oh yeah, add a regenerative breaking system and his mileage would go up too.

Maybe he could extend it with a small 3 hp generator that could automatically kick in and charge the battery.

It would be great for short trips around town..grocery/video/school etc but thats about it..range is way to short but its nice to see someone doing the conversion and laying the ground work for future vehicles that will get 300 miles per charge....congrats to him....

I think FourWheeler did an Electric conversion on a Rover about 4-5 years ago.
They had similar results, and while the low-end torque was great, the range was impracticle for everyday use.
Personally I'm paying about .15cents per KWH so with 24 batteries averaging 800CCA I'm guessing it's $25-$30 to fully recharge these batteries. Add more for heat loss and dissapation.
That's fine if I'm at the office and can use their Juice :) or have solar power.
I understand there is 0 emmisions at my vehicle, but most electricity does not come from 'natural' sources like Solar and wind.
It's still a good case-study and I like the Inventive spirit.
