The Firehouse, a media-only blog that is run by Chrysler Group recently posted an article about California's Placer County Sherrif's department specially modified Jeep Commander - used for search and rescue operations in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Luckily, everything on The Firehouse is "on the record", so here's the article...

We know all about what so-called 'off-road' vehicle a certain prominent California politician/actor drives. But It takes a special rugged vehicle for search and rescue operations in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains. Which is why the Placer County Sheriff’s Department was glad to get the keys to a specially-equipped 2006 Jeep® Commander, known as "Commander to the Rescue."

Jeep, Off-Road Adventures magazine and several automotive aftermarket manufacturers partnered to provide a vehicle capable of traversing the county’s nearly one million acres of public and private lands, which range from nearly sea level to 9,000-foot peaks.

The "Trail Rated" Commander got some extra gear to handle the rough terrain, such as higher-articulation suspension and aggressive tread off-road tires, recovery gear and winch, engine performance enhancements, a roof rack for additional carrying ability and special batteries to handle the extra electrical loads of winching and off-road lighting.

I do find it surprising that they are "advertising" Off-Road Adventures, with the window decal. I wonder if it was removed after this picture was taken.

Off-Road Adventures, aka: 4Wheel Parts' "magazine", sponsored the rig and featured the build-up through a couple of issues. last issue I got they were building the custom from bumper.

In Florida we have a town south of Daytona Beach, Ponce Inlet and they use Jeep Cherokee Sports for Police vehicles and even Lifeguard vehicles. Pretty weird to see as a Cherokee Driver myself getting pulled over by a Cherokee with blue lights flashing.

The border patrol in AZ purchased several Explorers and Expeditions awhile back. A friend of mine with a tow truck company in Nogales had to pull them out all the time, several warped their frames, broke axels, ect. A nightmare for the border patrol.

Now you see a lot of happy BP agents in their decked out Wranglers and even the older Broncos.

How I hate political ads; however, one that is running in northern Indiana deals with illegal immigrants. In the ad, the viewer gets a glimpse of a border patrol Wrangler in the desert.

 Re: Search and Rescue Commander
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it is a sad day in Michigan when their state troopers are driving Trailblazers. A couple years ago, I even saw them driving Ford ExPloders.

At least the LaPorte County, IN sheriff's department drives DODGE Durangos. At least it is "in the family".
