![]() I am kind of interested in the Patriot. From what I have read it is about the size of the XJ, but with a much more efficient powertrain. Now if it has any real off road ability I may have to look a little closer when it appears. As Scrambler Ken mentioned Jeep may havea lot of similar sized SUV's in the near future. It seems that everyone should be able to find something they like.

![]() Now I do hope Jeep does well with these 'soft-riders', but it seems there are several problems coming up.
1) So many models that are so similar. Jeep will have six 4-door SUVs all similar in size (Compass, Patriot, Liberty, 4-door Wrangler JK, Grand Cherokee, and Commander). Yes, I know the dimensions are all a bit different, but Jeep is basically going to be selling 6 vehicles that to an average consumer are all pretty similar. Most Car companies have a variety of vehicles, like cars, pickups, vans, and suvs. I worry that too many choices of similar suvs will just end up making Jeep compete with itself. 2) Production issues. Jeep is going to be pretty busy with adding the Commander, but a new Wrangler, plus a 4-door Wrangler, and 2 more suvs all to be introduced at the same time? I think Jeep will have its hands full trying to juggle the advertising, training of dealers and mechanics, as well as keeping track of new factories and inventory. 3) Dilution of the 'trail-rated' stamp. It was bad enough that Jeep dropped the true off-road test of the Rubicon certification, but classifying the Patriot as 'trail-rated', makes you wonder what trail rating really means? How many buyers will be fooled into thinking the Patriot is designed for serious off-roading? Now I'm not trying to claim Jeep is doomed, and I understand the need to diversify the line, but I still think there are better avenues and directions Jeep could have moved into and maintained the Jeep image. The Patriot is too similar to the Ford Escape, and the Compass reminds me of the Nissan Murano. Why is Jeep always following and not leading? |
