A number of readers have been sending us links to media coverage about the brand new Patriot and Compass "concept" cars - here's a few of them:

- This article at The Detroit Free Press makes it sound like the Patriot and Compass might be in production as soon as next year.

- AutoWeek has named the Compass the "Best Concept" of the Frankfurt Auto Show.

- TheAutoChannel.com has a gushing article about the 2 new Jeep concepts.

Re: Media Reaction to Patriot and Compass
I am kind of interested in the Patriot. From what I have read it is about the size of the XJ, but with a much more efficient powertrain. Now if it has any real off road ability I may have to look a little closer when it appears. As Scrambler Ken mentioned Jeep may havea lot of similar sized SUV's in the near future. It seems that everyone should be able to find something they like.

Re: Media Reaction to Patriot and Compass
Now I do hope Jeep does well with these 'soft-riders', but it seems there are several problems coming up.

1) So many models that are so similar. Jeep will have six 4-door SUVs all similar in size (Compass, Patriot, Liberty, 4-door Wrangler JK, Grand Cherokee, and Commander). Yes, I know the dimensions are all a bit different, but Jeep is basically going to be selling 6 vehicles that to an average consumer are all pretty similar. Most Car companies have a variety of vehicles, like cars, pickups, vans, and suvs. I worry that too many choices of similar suvs will just end up making Jeep compete with itself.

2) Production issues. Jeep is going to be pretty busy with adding the Commander, but a new Wrangler, plus a 4-door Wrangler, and 2 more suvs all to be introduced at the same time? I think Jeep will have its hands full trying to juggle the advertising, training of dealers and mechanics, as well as keeping track of new factories and inventory.

3) Dilution of the 'trail-rated' stamp. It was bad enough that Jeep dropped the true off-road test of the Rubicon certification, but classifying the Patriot as 'trail-rated', makes you wonder what trail rating really means? How many buyers will be fooled into thinking the Patriot is designed for serious off-roading?

Now I'm not trying to claim Jeep is doomed, and I understand the need to diversify the line, but I still think there are better avenues and directions Jeep could have moved into and maintained the Jeep image. The Patriot is too similar to the Ford Escape, and the Compass reminds me of the Nissan Murano. Why is Jeep always following and not leading?

 IF ....
Compass - 4cyl - Low Price/Fuel Economy
Patriot - 4cyl/diesel? - Low Price/Fuel Economy
Liberty - 6cyl/diesel - Mid Price/Towing
TK - 4-6cyl/diesel – Mid-Higher Price/Off-Road Icon
TK 4dr - 6cyl/diesel - Higher Price/Off-Road Icon
Grand - 6cyl/8cyl MDS - luxury SUV
Commander - 6cyl/8cyl - 7passanger luxury SUV

I'm not saying I have everything figured out, but hear me out.

First you've got your car based Jeeps (Compass and Patriot). They are to compete with other low price/fuel efficient SUV's. While the towing and off-road elements aren't so great compared to other Jeeps, the Compass is not going to take away sales from other Jeeps and Patriot will have U (utility). What I don't think Patriot will have is high off-road quality or much more than 2000 lbs towing.

Then you've got Liberty and TK. They separate themselves from Patriot with their power, off-road features, towing, and less fuel economy. Also these would be in a higher price range than Patriot with the TK 4dr being the most expensive. Of course the TK will likely be the most off-road capable of current Jeeps and remain the icon, thus separating itself from both Patriot and Liberty.

Then rounding out the top are the Grand and Commander. Much more expensive in price and they differ from each other in seating and styling.

So I think all these Jeeps will have their nitch or individuality. In my opinion, the most similar in features will be the Liberty and the TK 4dr. The removable top and additional off-road features (i.e. Rubicon/IFS vs. SFA) will make the TK 4dr stand out from Liberty, but Liberty's likely lower price with similar features will have the two compete with each other to a certain extent.

My thoughts, probably worth about 2 cents

 Re: IF ....
Greg, you pretty much got it spot on.

The Patriot / Compass will cost DCX very little because of their reliance on the basic components from the Calibre, etc.

The vehicles may compete with each other a little bit, but self competition can keep customers from leaving the Jeep brand.
