SalesPatriot Only Bright Spot in May 2008 Jeep Sales
Posted by mike on 2008/6/4 7:08:59 (2272) reads

From a Chrysler LLC press release.

Chrysler LLC today reported total May 2008 sales of 148,747 units, which is 25 percent below the same period last year. Total May sales reflect a combination of record sales of Chrysler's newest highly fuel-efficient vehicles, an unusually high 40 percent cut in monthly fleet vehicle sales and a continued industry wide slowdown in pickup truck and SUV sales. All sales figures are reported as unadjusted.

The fuel-efficient Jeep(R) Patriot posted record monthly sales as it continues to be one of Chrysler's fastest growing models. Jeep Patriot sales of 8,199 units represented an 82 percent increase in May 2008 versus the same period last year.

Despite slow industry sales, the Company finished the month with 412,009 units of inventory, or a 75-day supply. As part of a planned reduction, inventory is down 14 percent compared with May 2007 when it totaled 479,501 units.

Count me among those who continue to love the XJ and am more than a little disappointed with most of the current Jeep product offerings. The Patriot and the Wrangler Rubicon may be the only two products that are worthy of the Jeep name. The Rubicon is obviously a JEEP, the Patriot seems like an alternative for someone who needs the size, economy and light use Four wheel drive ability but not the intense off road use. The other products Grand, Commander, Compass really don't have any distinct advantages over many off the competitive vehicles. These vehicles are marketings attempt to offer a Jeep for everyone. Even to the extreme of the SRT8 Grand Cherokee. Interesting vehicle, bot not a good fit for the Jeep image. I'll be the first to let you know when I see my first SRT off road! It's also amazing to me that Jeep is smart enough to maintain the "Cherokee" name and image outside the USA but walked away from it when they introduced the Liberty. The reality is that they have speent the last 9 years and 4 new model introductions trying to recapture the XJ Cherokee appeal and versatility. KEEP TRYING GUYS because you're not even close yet!! I just bought a 2000 XJ Sport and I love it.

I find it very interesting that most of us, myself included, still own an XJ Cherokee. As far as I'm concerned Jeep abandoned us. I would have been fine with a replacement that met the same criteria. At least the Patriot sort of looks like one, but the Off raod capability just isn't there, and that is an important criteria for me. My 1993 XJ 4WD will get 20 mpg if I drive it easy and stay in the slow lane with the Hybrids, but that's just not good enough these days. The 1986 model it replaced had the 4 cylinder/5 spd/4wd and 4.10 axles, and it was rated at 24 but would get 27 on long trips. I ran the Rubicon with ease in the '86. but I doubt the Patriot could do that. I want the concept they showed a while back that gets 110 MPG. Just build it!

Something like 2.8 million XJs built in the U.S.! China built the XJ (a.k.a. Beijing Model 2500) 'til ~2006.

I've got a '98 XJ with a 5-spd & 140K on the odo; runs perfect, lots of torque. That's why I'm hesitant to buy a new Jeep.

I found the new boxy '08 Liberty looks & "feels" closest to the XJ. I test drove one with a 6spd stick. Pretty good. Price is right, too. The MT stick tows 3500#; the AT tows 5000# (Patriot only 2000#).

The Patriot "feels" smaller inside than my XJ, and with just a few options, the price can soar past the Liberty's!

The articles that quote exterior dimesnion comparisons can be misleading, because "thicker" doors, seats & instrument panels greatly affect interior space (obviously...)

If U love your XJ, try test driving a new Liberty. Ironically, it is tagged as the "Cherokee" in other countries. Go figure.

Our patriots and compasses are sold out! I even ordered a compass last month for a customer!!

I hear of a early interior refresh, nothing else

I will be surprised if the commander makes it til 2009!

I have checked out the Patriot but, in order to live with it as an everyday driver I would want the Freedom Drive package and the prefered equipment package. After that the sticker is almost the same as a Wrangler X 2 door and the mpg is only 2 or 3 mpg better than the Wrangler.
If I pick the Patriot I would have to keep my XJ for more serious Jeep adventures. If I would pick the Wrangler I would probably sell the XJ.

I have been considering a Patriot for over a year now as a daily runabout, but i kept reading all the negatives, especially in the early days about it being discontinued.
For what it is, i think its fine, the styling is nice also (i just dont like those huge plasic bumber things)

If they tweek the 09 enough, i think i will probably get one for running around.

Funny, everbody was wondering if the Patriot was a good idea just a year ago but now it looks like the only Jeep posting gains. I would wait for the 09 Patriots as they may have many improvements inside. There was an article awhile back about the improvements to the interiors that were going to be done to the 09's. I personally am thinking of down sizing from my Commander to a Liberty. I wish they got better milage but they are still better than the Commander. Anyone know of any planned improvements in 09 for the Liberty? Should I pick up an 08 end of model year deal or wait until 09?

FWIW...
I almost bought a Patriot earlier this week. There was a little known dealer cash back incentive (that was an either/or incentive deal versus that gas card boondoggle...) If didn't want the gas card, U could opt for more cash rebate... Who knew?! It wasn't posted on www.jeep.com... It ended 6/2/08. I don't know if it's been extended.

I was considering a "stripped" 4X4 Patriot 5spd that stickered at $17,805. After my "Affiliate Deal" they were willing to take off an additional $2500 ($500 Consumer cash back + add'l $2000 Dealer cashback) That brought it to a mere $14,500. HARD to pass up!

Scared me! I almost wrote the check... but my saner Jeep-self prevailed and I passed on the cute ute's lack of towing capacity (2000# max) and the questionable MPGs. I say questionable, because there are many reports of Patriot owners not getting close to the 22/27mpg (5spd, 4X4).

With my heavy foot, God knows I'd be getting 20-22 max., which is only a few more than my XJ gets... And my Cherokee 4.0L 5spd has A LOT more balls than the Patriot... or Wrangler Unlimited...

Decisions decisions... Wonder what awaits us with the '09 Wranglers in the fall? Hopefully a few "packages" with some better looking wheels, and maybe an engine upgrade? I can't hold out much longer... It's killing me.

It's fairly obivous....

NO ONE WANTS THE COMPASS

Since the demise of the station wagon, people that want some utility or to haul a family can get an SUV or a minivan.

Combine the fuel efficiency of the Patriot with the $2.99 gas deal and it seems like a no brainer.

Is anyone surprised? My wife has told me that when her XJ dies, she'd consider a Patriot. For me with a ~5 mi commute, I've considered converting an old XJ to electric like this guy: http://www.driveev.com/jeepev/
