MiscellaneousThe $100,000 Revamped M151 Jeep

$100,000 for a revamped military Jeep? Granted, this is right on the edge of the type of Jeep news we normally cover, but it made it to the front page of CNN.com so we thought we'd put up a blurb about it.

It seems that the Marine Corps is paying Ocala, Florida based American Growler (the site is under construction - not too much to see) $100,000 apiece for the revamped Jeep.

The Corps has ordered 400 of these Jeeps, but stand by their order stating that each vehicle has been upgraded with the latest modern technology and has been adapted to fit in the V-22 Osprey.

There's quite a bit of controversy about the order - it seems that the Dominican Republic paid only $33,000/each for a different version of the Growler in 2001.

Check out the entire story for all the details.

I always liked the "Mutt", and thought that it never got the respect that it deserved as true JEEP. 4 Wheel Drive, 4 Wheel Independent Suspension, snorkel...

This is the YJ that JEEP SHOULD HAVE BUILT!!!

Yes, MUTTS are cool, I wheel occasionally with two friends who have them. I don't understand the YJ slur. The MUTTS have lower power and don't have low range, only two or four wheel drive. I wouldn't mind having one for its place in history, fun around town or light wheeling, but as a daily driver/trail rig, no thanks. Most mods are difficult because of the unibody and unique suspension [that's another issue as well]. The YJ was a refined CJ7, lots of interchangable parts and lots of aftermarket parts available, and it's much easier to live with. IMHO, If they had given it a CJ # and used round headlights, most web wheelers would worship it.

If you can buy that b*tch for $7,500, I'll take two - 1 to rally off road and 1 to go to work in!

Go to the website www.americangrowler.com

It is funny, though, that they are down now when they could be making huge business with a story on the JeepNewsNow, let alone CNN.

It was also the front page story on todays USA Today newspaper. It sure doesn't look big enough to carry more than 2 marines in full gear.
