Chrysler has announced the opening (which probably happened months ago) of two new manufacturing plants that are helping to build the all-new 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Detriot engine plant and the Indiana transmission plant are suppling components for the new GC. The Detroit News writes:
Chrysler Corp. is counting on major savings in operating and warranty costs with the opening this summer of a $930-million V-8 engine plant on Mack Avenue in Detroit and a $1.2-billion truck transmission plant in Kokomo, Ind. From start to finish, they represent advances in efficiency for the No. 3 automaker, already recognized as Detroit's low-cost producer.
...snip...
The two plants play a leading and critical role in the most complicated vehicle launch in Chrysler history: the redesigned 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
