The Jeep Liberty CRD makes an appearance on the official Jeep Web site.

The official Jeep site is now showcasing the much-discussed diesel Jeep Liberty - check it out here.  Some snippets from the text:

How did we make Jeep Liberty more capable than ever? Three letters: CRD.

CRD stands for Common Rail Diesel - an all-new, second-generation diesel engine that can be found at the heart of the Jeep Liberty CRD, available later this year. Forget everything you remember about the diesels of old.

The all-new 2.8L turbocharged Liberty CRD produces the kind of down-low pulling power that's perfect for hauling, towing, passing and keeping out of trouble.

As the first diesel-powered, mid-size SUV available in North America, Liberty CRD is blazing a new trail so you can go further off road between fill-ups.

Thanks to modern advancements in engine technology, including Multi-Pilot Direct Injection, dual overhead camshafts and gear-driven balance shafts, Liberty CRD runs as smoothly as a conventional gasoline engine.

don't get too excited:-we've had the 2.8 crd in the uk now for a year and it is noisy, uneconomical and totally unrefined!!!
nothing like a petrol engine to the extent that a 3.7 is a better proposition and is £1000 cheaper.

I'd like to hear more from people in the UK and elsewhere who've had experiences with the 2.8
D Liberty. I've found some reviews on the web. Most are very favorable. I'd like a sense of the true mileage I might expect on the highway. My guess from what I've read is about 26 mpg. The Mercedes E320 diesel gets about 8 mpg more and I don't understand why the Jeep 2.8
B does so much less.

If anyone thinks 26 on the highway is overly optimistic, I'd like to know.

Thanks

Steve, Hackensack NJ

Here are the specs for the 2005 Liberty

DC is only going to make 5,000 for the US market. There is no reference anywhere as to what the price is going to be for the diesel version. I also agree that not having a manual transmission is missing the point as to why people are going to buy this SUV - fuel economy and towing power. I think a lot of people in the US ignore diesel engines - they don't want their home smelling like the bus station :-)

Here is a link for the Edmunds discussion group for the Jeep Liberty Diesel - has many comments from Europe about their experiences with it. Engine is made in Italy for Detriot Diesel.

This is wonderful news for all Jeep owners. My immediate family currently owns: 3 Wranglers, 1 Grand Cherokee, 1 Liberty, and 1 Cherokee. If the
D trend spreads to other platforms I can see many new vehicles in our future!

Anyone interested in a Wrangler Unlimited with Rubicon powertrain and a
D under the hood? :)

Interesting that DC elected to use the 2.8 and auto tranny instead of the 2.5 and 5 speed manual tranny. I assumed this diesel initiative was about economy, performance, and jeep "toughness". It appears DC is more interested in the urban population than in the rural population where jeep earned its reputation.

They tease with comments that it is coming this year, but so is Christmas. No indication as to when. I'd like to see more specificatons, too. Will it still tow 5000 lbs.? Will it be available in Sport, Renegade and Limited? Very frustrating.
