Not too much to say about this - the reviewer just flat out didn't like it:

The fabulous, charismatic Jeep brand was supposed to have been one of the big attractions when Daimler-Benz took over Chrysler in 1998. But after a week spent driving the redesigned 2008 Jeep Liberty through the White Mountains of New Hampshire, I couldn’t find anything admirable about it.

Maybe the Germans felt the same way and were filled with despair. If the Americans couldn’t build a wonderful new Jeep, what hope was there for this German-American conglomeration?

We lease a 2005 Liberty. I drove a 2008, and intend to lease or buy one. I thought it rode and handled better than our 2005, and I like the return to a hatchback. They don't compare in ride or handling with crossovers, but are comfortable enough. We just did a 2900 mile road trip at 20 mpg, with about 60 miles of moderate off-roading, mainly Death Valley. It's pretty civilized for its capabilities. The FJ40 has horrible visibility and ergonomics, and I will not consider it.

Blah blah blah...

The numbers tell a much different story. The new Liberty outsold the JK in Jan08 & Feb08, so once again the NYT prints all the news that makes you fit-to-be-tied!

I like right angles. It was time for the previous "bug-eyed beauty" to go. It's hip to be square!

Here's the numbers:
____________FEB08_____CYTD
Wrangler.....7,088.....13,225
Liberty........7,350.....15,681

1.) I am sick of every review talking about the quality of the interiors. I have been in a sport model, it's grey, it's boring, it's bland but the quality isn't any worse than Toyota quality. I have been in a Limited model, it's really quite nice. But everyone -- including Chrysler -- knows that more attention needs to be paid to the interior to be competitive.

2.) What I am REALLY sick of is people complaining about a rough ride in an SUV. Don't like it -- buy a minivan (er - as they are called now -- a crossover). SUVs should have a solid rear axle and a stiffer suspension, that's what makes them perform well off-road.

Every time I pass the old Liberty on the street I say to myself,"thats a nice little jeep, it wasn't so bad"
I wasnt a big fan when it first came out, but i think it has aged well.

The new one looks out of date already, and doesnt seem like much worthwhile was added under the skin other than lenght and weight.

Not surprising- the prior generation of Liberty was a HUGE hit with the female segment of the population. This was partially the reason it sold so well. So now Jeep redesigns the liberty to attempt to alienate the segment thats actually driving its sales by "making it look more manly". Not surprising Jeep has shot itself in the foot.

". . . . Jeep has shot itself in the foot." I don't think so.
