CommanderCommander CRD Review

The Austrailian recently ran a review of the diesel Commander:

Jeep hopes a strong diesel engine will stop its first seven-seater getting bogged by high fuel prices, writes Terry Martin

Perhaps it was sensitive to how much the cost of fuel is influencing new car buyers, but Jeep did not want us to test its new Commander 4WD fitted with a 5.7-litre Hemi V8. Instead, management insisted we assess the diesel version of this brutish, brick-like seven-seater - the biggest wagon the American 4WD brand has ever built. It thinks the diesel will be the one that 80 per cent of customers - and 100 per cent of motoring writers - will like best.

That is the strangest review and written by someone who sometimes seemed like he new what he was talking about and sometimes didn't.
4.5 out of 5 stars and then pissed and moaned about almost everything else.

The fuel economy seems a little disappointing. Dividing the conversion factor 236 by 10.1 I get 23.36 mpg (US); dividing 236 by 13.1 I get 18.01 mpg (US). I would be hoping for something like 25 mpg (US EPA combined) in the 2007 JGC CRD.

The comment about the XK being the biggest wagon Jeep has built was made by an Australian publication. They simply may not even be aware of the old SJ wagons. But even so, from a seating standpoint, the XK actually is the 'biggest' wagon Jeep has built because no other Jeep has had 3 rows of seats or seating for 7 people.

Actually the Willys Wagon was a seven-passenger vehicle.

I'll grant you the 7 seats; although you can easily pour 4 youngins behind the rear seat in a "Real" FSJ - that'd make 10! As for the Willys, you can stack them in that bad boy like cordwood. I have one of each. My snotty comment has more to do with DCX's apparent lack of respect to predecessor Jeeps. It's like anything pre- Chrysler never existed.

I actually like the Commander. Reminds me of my XJs. And flame on this - my wife wants a Patriot.

"the biggest wagon...has ever built? It's just a grand cherokee with a body kit. Anyone at DCX remember the full size cherokees and grand wagoneers? THOSE were and still are FULL SIZE JEEPS.
