CompassDiesel Compass vs. Prius - Flawed Comparison

Treehugger has a neat article about a recent comparison by the U.K. publication Clean Green Cars of the Jeep Compass (Diesel) and Toyota Prius.

While the original article seems to indicate that the MPG of the two vehicles is almost identical, Treehugger (and others) have pointed out a major flaw in the test:

Reddit commenter nomopongo beat us to the punch, so we'll just quote him/her here: "The Prius does not use a conventional fuel tank, and because of this, you can't use the refueling numbers in order to calculate MPG, unless you do it over many fill ups. The Prius uses a resin gas bladder in order to minimize fume-related pollution. The article is wrong."

The Prius hybrid indeed uses a laminated resin fuel bladder inside its gas tank to reduce the amount of gasoline fumes that escape, thus reducing air pollution. Nominally, the gas tank of the Prius can contain 11 US gallons, but owners of the car have reported fill ups from "empty" varying from 8 gallons to over 12 gallons.

Regardless of the flaw, it's an interesting read.

Here in Phoenix Unleaded is $4.15 gal and Diesel is $4.79 a gal

.64 cents does not deter my diesel ownership

The U.S. diesel bandwagon is leaving town... With diesel at $1 higher than gas ($5 vs $4, where I am...) the interest in new diesels seems to be waning. Even the "experts" (some predicted 10-15% of U.S. autos would be diesel-powered in just a handful of years) are now backing off and saying we'll be lucky to see half that number...

And it's not just the price of the S15, it's also the added cost of the diesel powertrain & new ULSD "clean" pollution controls (~$3000-5000, for an auto).

Unless someone finds a way to refine cheaper S15, diesel's future looks tenuous. Of course, if gas goes to $15/gal, then $16/gal for diesel would be a much better deal --only ~5% higher cost for ~25% better mpgs!

Care to source any of the bandwagon leaving town claims? Most of the new Diesel models announced over the past couple years haven't even hit the showrooms yet.

Whether it is or isn't I don't know how you could possibly tell at this point.

loner-

Fair enough!

These are merely auto industry "predictions", but predictions based on new product timelines (stuff already in the product development pipeline) and on some current realities of crude (& ULSD) prices and diesel refining capacity (i.e., market pressures for stuff to get blocked from the product development pipeline)... Then there's always the U.S. public's persistent (mis)perception of diesels from days gone by...

I've read several articles in auto industry journals & Detroit news sources --and I get to talk with our PD engineers, who talk directly with the OEMs-- all warning that the initial projections may have been over-zealous: predicting too rosy a future for diesels in the U.S. To your request, here is one source that hits a lot of the key points:
Future for diesel cars may not be as good as we once hoped...

FYI - I work for a Tier-1 supplier to OEMs. We manufacture fuel systems (injectors, fuel rails, intake manifolds, etc...) and emissions components (EGRs, evap canisters, catalytic converters, etc.) for gas, E85, & diesel powertrains.

For the record, I'd love a JK diesel with tons of torque! ...as long as it didn't have a $3000-5000 price premium, cost $1.00 more for S15 per gallon than gas, and have the potential to cost me thousands in repairs when all the NEW ULSD pollution controls widgets go tits-up, out-of-warranty...
