Care to source any of the bandwagon leaving town claims? Most of the new Diesel models announced over the past couple years haven't even hit the showrooms yet.

Whether it is or isn't I don't know how you could possibly tell at this point.

These are merely auto industry "predictions", but predictions based on new product timelines (stuff already in the product development pipeline) and on some current realities of crude (& ULSD) prices and diesel refining capacity (i.e., market pressures for stuff to get blocked from the product development pipeline)... Then there's always the U.S. public's persistent (mis)perception of diesels from days gone by...

I've read several articles in auto industry journals & Detroit news sources --and I get to talk with our PD engineers, who talk directly with the OEMs-- all warning that the initial projections may have been over-zealous: predicting too rosy a future for diesels in the U.S. To your request, here is one source that hits a lot of the key points:

FYI - I work for a Tier-1 supplier to OEMs. We manufacture fuel systems (injectors, fuel rails, intake manifolds, etc...) and emissions components (EGRs, evap canisters, catalytic converters, etc.) for gas, E85, & diesel powertrains.

For the record, I'd love a JK diesel with tons of torque! ...as long as it didn't have a $3000-5000 price premium, cost $1.00 more for S15 per gallon than gas, and have the potential to cost me thousands in repairs when all the NEW ULSD pollution controls widgets go tits-up, out-of-warranty...
