From the this-couldn't-possibly-be-true department, Autoblog is reporting that there may be talks going on between the Indian company and Chrysler LLC regarding the Jeep brand:
In order to reach the markets that matter, M&M may be looking to forge an alliance with Chrysler LLC. The Indian firm originally began selling Wranglers in its home market and might be interested in taking Jeep off Cerberus' hands. A report in the Economic Times says that "M&M is reportedly in talks with Chrysler for its iconic Jeep brand" although there's no confirmation that Chrysler is looking to offload the brand – yet.
Could Cerberus finally be looking to begin selling off parts of the Chrysler trifecta as many industry analysts have predicted? It certainly isn't out of the question considering the private equity firm's history.
Yikes.

![]() If I recall, we had been loudly griping about the (mis?)direction of the German-owned Jeep brand since they bought the company and passed on putting a quaint little 4-door Wrangler concept called the Dakar into production. And before you ask, yeah, I'm still sore about that.
No, the irony isn't lost on any of us, my man... |

![]() If Chrysler/JEEP execs have been paying attention to this blog for the past few years, they'd realize that few topics provoke more comment and support from JEEP enthusiasts than the Gladiator/Scrambler/JT-type platforms. With JK sales supposedly dipping, the time to expand this successful platform --and sustain annual sales >100K-- is right now!

![]() If it does happen, at least it is not going to a Chinese Government-sponsored company that will strip it down to it's bare assets and keep the engineering for a China-only version that would never pass U.S. standards.
Personally, I don't think it will happen, if anything, Jeep is the Shining Star of the Cerebrus Chrysler company, and either wiould form the backbone of the Chrysler line, or go employee/investor owned like Harley Davidson. Jeep is an American Icon and I would expect nothing less of a Presidential Executive order blocking the sale if CHINA wanted to buy Jeep. |

![]() Not gonna happen.
I agree, they'll likely angle for some sort of partnership to sell certain types of vehicles. In a sick twist of irony, they'll probably end up selling a JT and/or Gladiator sort of vehicle while here in the US Cerberus will continue to say "Oh, we don't see a light truck as profitable in the Jeep line-up..." |

![]() Look on the bright side...
Think of the possibilities: 1) An Indian-made Jeep with heated, massaging, and reverse reclining seats --The Kama Sutra Edition 2) An Indian-made Jeep with Gold leaf accents and marble floor boards -- The Taj Mahal Edition 3) An Indian-made Jeep with spartan ammenities, and a very quiet engine, with white linen seats -- The Gandhi Edition ![]() |

![]() This would be the worst thing ever for Jeep. Jeep is America's SUV. You look at a Jeep and you see American Heritage, a war Hero. That is what makes Jeep so great. Jeep being owned and operated by a company from India would destroy everything that Jeep means.

![]() This is the most unrealistic rumour I've heard yet.
Next week's headline: Wrangler plant to be built on the moon. Cerberus to save thousands due to lower gravity. Gimme a break. This is going to be a partnership to build and sell Jeeps in India again and I'm all for it. There's no way Cerberus is stupid enough to sell off Jeep and keep Chrysler and Dodge? Yeah, right. |

![]() Let's just hope they leave design and ergonomic decisions to US staff -- I have seen most of Mahindra's designs for their vehicles (the non Jeep licensed ones) and their not pretty at all.

![]() How ironic would this be, considering the fact that Mahindra & Mahindra got started in the automotive business by assembling "complete knock-down" kits from Willys Overland?

![]() I'd like to know what M&M would plan to do with the brand before I poop my pants. They've been selling Jeeps in India for quite a while now. I wonder if they'd set up offices in the US where Jeep legacy and prowess would be understood by them. There are a lot of really smart people in India, and many of their smartest tend to move on to the US or UK.
Assuming there were any truth to this, I'm not ready to decide whether it would be good or bad based on the sole fact that they're an Indian company. |
