SalesJeep Sales Down, New Cherokee and Wrangler Incentives

From Yahoo news:

DaimlerChrysler said on Wednesday it will idle its Jeep assembly plant in Toledo, Ohio next week due to a backlog of Cherokee and Wrangler sport utility vehicles.

The plant idling, which will result in the temporary layoff of about 2,800 of the 5,200 workers at the plant, comes a day after the German-American automaker reported a 12 percent drop in U.S. sales of its Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler and Plymouth brands for July.

Sales of the Jeep Cherokee fell 33 percent in July, while Wrangler sales dropped six percent.

Workers at the plant, who just returned to work this week after a four-week summer shutdown, two weeks longer than usual, will receive 95 percent of their pay during the layoff.

Earlier today, DaimlerChrysler announced new U.S. consumer incentives on its U.S. brands, including $1,500 cash back on its 2000 Jeep Cherokee and $625 back on the 6-cylinder automatic Jeep Wrangler.

Now would be a good time to get that new Chrokee or Wrangler...

When my Wrangler sport came in,(picked it up Monday), it was the only one the dealer had received, so yours may come in early also. I also ordered mine with an automatic, which on the window sticker was not rebated, but on the dealers invoice it was, so the $625 savings is being carried on, temporarily at least! Also, the electrical group is now standard & cloth seats come with the pkg.. cya!!!

Come on incentives! I just bought a 2000 XJ Sport 2-door 4x4 loaded and took advantage of the incentives! I just finished bolting on the skid plates and tow hooks....1st Jeep since I unloaded my old J-10 back in 1986 w/ 170K miles. I wish I had it back.

Response to Rick: The workers get paid 95% of their pay because its in their UAW contract. Why do you think new cars are so expensive?

Hey Jim, thanks for responding. I ordered mine on July 6th. I was told it would probably be the end of August before it arrives. Yours got there really fast. . . . . . lucky you! My local dealer just received a couple of SEs, but no SPORTs yet (which is what I ordered). Guess I'll just continue to wait. Thanks again for the response, and enjoy your '01!

Getting back to the original question, I ordered my '01 wrangler on July 6, and she got delivered today, Aug. 12. That's a little ahead of the promised date, so there should not be any delay on your new Jeep. Enjoy, my friend. We'll meet on the road someday!!!

Hey Doug, don't forget all the advertising cost that we have to pay for! All that air time's "hidden" (or maybe not hidden) in the cost too.

Why the hell would they pay them 95% of their salary while they were laid off??? They are already overpaid for that type of work..

I hope its the Cherokee side of the plant that doesn't work next week. I have a 2001 Wrangler that is being built. It HAD an estimated ship date of 8-9-00. I don't want to have to wait another week. Does anyone know if both the Cherokee and the Wrangler are effected with next week's plant closing?
