MiscellaneousNew Labor Contract for Liberty's Builders

DaimlerChrysler has reached an agreement for a new contract with workers at Toledo's Jeep Liberty Assembly.

From Yahoo! News:

DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler arm said on Friday it had reached a tentative agreement on a new labor contract with workers at the Ohio Jeep plant that builds its popular Jeep Liberty sport utility vehicle.

Chrysler spokesman Dan Bodene said no details of the new contract with United Auto Workers Local 12 would be released before union members vote on the deal on Sept. 24. Union officials could not be immediately reached for comment.

The 4,300 UAW workers in Toledo, Ohio, who also assemble the Jeep Wrangler SUV, had complained over the past year about workers being laid off despite mandatory overtime on the Liberty assembly line. The dispute escalated to the point that Chrysler Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche met with union officials and promised improvements.

As part of Zetsche's $4 billion turnaround plan, Chrysler planned to shed 19,000 hourly workers, most in the United States and Canada. In the past year, Chrysler executives have also vowed to improve efficiency at its factories, which has lagged behind General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. for years.

The Liberty has been a sales success for Chrysler, with 108,739 sold this year through August. Chrysler executives have said the Liberty was commanding a higher price from consumers than competitors such as the Ford Escape.

I honestly can't say whether the Liberty commands a higher price than the Ford Escape.

But...I see way more Ford Escapes and Mazda Tributes in my neck of the woods (Ontario, Canada) then Libertys.

However, it's also fair for me to say that I see many more Libertys now as well, then it seemed the first 6 months or so that it was available.

But...I also see DC advertising Libertys with Zero % financing....and wasn't that something that DC execs were bragging about some time back. That the Liberty sold without extra profit squeezing incentives for consumers?

Anyway....When it comes to performance...well the Escape/Tribute is simply a cute ute with little off-road pedigree. The Liberty may be no XJ...but it still has some off-road chops.

But...when it comes to styling. My vote is for the Escape/Tibute Hands down.

Which begs the question...Why did the Liberty have to be so unusual looking. Now, I know some might find them attractive...but time and time again...I have heard people say..."The Liberty is Ugly".

I think that its sad that DC is laying off all those factory workers. I bet most of them have been working for Jeep for a long time, probobly in the XJ plant. I think that DC should lay off some of the execs that dont know what jeep is all about, and with the hefty paycheck of one of the execs, pay for 2 or 3 more factory workers.
