The Toledo Blade has a nice article about the last days of Jeep production at the historic Parkway plant in Toledo:

For more than 80 years, two smokestacks bearing “Overland” spelled out in brick have towered over Toledo’s Jeep Parkway plant, a remnant of the auto company that started the massive complex in 1910.

But like Willys-Overland Motor Co., what remains of the nation’s longest-operating auto plant will become defunct this week and eventually torn down, wrenching the hearts of workers and retirees such as Lucy Bonilla, Barbara Wawrzyniak, and Marv Machinski. Retirees such as Bob Thompson, however, look to the future.

About a third of Jeep Parkway was demolished in 2002, and a time line for the rest — including the circa-1920 smokestacks, visible from I-75, which generations of local residents identify with — has not been determined, a company spokesman told The Blade last week.

It's a pretty thorough article, including a timeline history of the facility. The last Wrangler is scheduled to be completed 11am Friday.

OK... Can somebody help me out here understanding this... I'll quote from the original article:

"For the past few years, Wranglers continued to be built and painted at Parkway by about 250 workers and then shipped to the Stickney factory for final assembly."

How far apart are Parkway and Stickney from one another? Doesn't Jeep make over 100,000 Wranglers a year? This implies that they move all those partially completed Jeeps from one plant to another. Is this common in the auto industry? Sounds inefficient...

Thanks,

Joe

FYI, the two plants are only a few miles away from each other and it is pretty much all highway between them.

I guess there are some environmetnal concerns with making the site accessible to the public as a museum or park after it is decommissioned although I do not know the extent of the problems. I live about 2 miles away from the Jeep Parkway Plant and would hate to see it be demolished. If anyone has any ideas on how to save it or at least a portion of it, let me know. My thinking was that the City could buy it from DC for $1 and forgive any environmental responsibility. The site could then be cleaned up with public and private money and turned into a museum/park/jeep test track facility. Any thoughts??

Think they will sell bricks from the old factory? That would be cool! OR should I look for them on Ebay?

For the die hard Jeep fan, this summer put in a patio made from Jeep Parkway Plant bricks. Sweet!

Does anyone know what the last TJ model is?
What it going to happen with it.
I seems the last model of other Jeeps have ended up in Chyrsler's vehicle archive.

They usually put out some press release type PR with that stuff in it. I know the XJ is in the Chrysler museum.

I think it's a shame that there are no public / private plans to turn at least a portion of that plant into a museum. All I know is that all of the Jeeps that either myself of my family have owned have come from that plant, and they all held up pretty darn well.
