CompassStar Chrysler Car Designer Keeping His Eye on Patriot and Compass Reaction
Posted by mike on 2006/11/15 8:02:00 (870) reads

Ralph Gilles, one of Chrysler Group's lead designers and a star among his peers (he designed the Chrysler 300) has been tasked with his next project: the next generation of Chrysler Group pickup trucks and SUVs. First up, an all-new Dodge Ram.

In addition, he's got some other work to do:

His other big project is monitoring consumer reaction to the new Jeep Compass and Patriot SUVs. He says the small sport-utility vehicles will show where Chrysler can take the Jeep brand, which has long been known for its rugged vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler. Because of the struggling market for full- and midsize SUVs, the Jeep brand has seen sales drop by 3.9 percent through October, according to Autodata.

Something tells me that Mr. Gilles stamp may show up in the next generation of Jeep vehicles.

Whatever you think of his work to date, Gilles is the highest profile designer in the Chrysler group. They have put their heaviest hitter in their most important product segment.

I realize styling is a subjective matter but, if this guy is their star then IMO we will see a lot more ugly DC products in the near future. DC had a lot of years to work on the Sebring/Avenger cars. Plenty of time to look at the mid size segement and come out with a couple of knockouts and this is the best they could do.

I dont think he had anything to do with the sebring or avenger models in terms of design. Both of those cars look as though they will struggle on design aspects alone though. I do think Jeep really messed up on the Compass by making the front end look like the car just farted so hard it made the face compress.

I don't think he was involved with the Sebring or Avenger. He was involved with the 300C, the Charger (both huge sellers), and the Magnum. After that he was transferred to head up truck and SUV design.
