MSN Autos has an article about the hits and misses of the 2005 auto year - surprisingly, the Liberty CRD is one of the most disappointing:
The gasoline-powered Liberty is a decent small SUV, although its V6 engine gets poor fuel economy (15 mpg overall). Offering a diesel engine in the Liberty seemed promising, especially if it were as refined as other diesels we've driven recently. But the diesel-powered Liberty CRD is noisy and slow, and gets only 18 mpg overall.

![]() EPA Fuel Estimates:
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/2001cartablef.jsp?id=22529 True Consumer Mileage: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/mpg/MPG.do?action=mpgData&vehicleID=21596&details=on&browser=true Note that the average consumer mileage was pretty much on par with the EPA estimates. Both were considerably above the laughable Consumer Reports estimate. These reports give the Liberty 102 miles greater in range per tank of gas than the Consumer Reports estimate. |

![]() I'd be willing to bet OOJ's pristine, heritage YJ that the guy who wrote this review didn't even step foot in the CRD to take a road test, and is probably some suck-up greenie trying in some flailing attempt to sway buyers away from buying a CRD...
I don't believe that he only got 18MPG. A diesel Excursion 7.3L Powerstroke gets 18MPG. I have heard the CRD from the inside and out, and not only is it quiet, it is QUIETER than most gas engines (It is DEFINITELY quieter than OOJ's YJ engine), and probably runs cleaner than 90% of all the cars on the road. I sat behind one and did not detect a hint of an exhaust odor, I drove next to one while accelerating, and didn't hear a peep from the engine. The bottom line is that even though diesels may emit a slightly higher amount of pollutants per mile, the overall impact on the environment is negated by the fact that one unit of crude oil produces 5 units of diesel, and only 4 units of gasoline (choose your standard of measurment). Technology also permits the CRD and other new-generation diesels to run cleaner than the worn out, gross-polluting clunkers and beaters like OOJ's YJ that are still chugging along, despite the fact that their emissions system is only warranted for 100K miles. If everyone drove CRD's, then we would consume less oil, simply by the fact that you can produce more gallons of diesel fuel from a barrrel of oil than gallons of gasoline, plus diesel engines can burn a much wider variety of bio-fuels, bio-blends, waste oils, and alternative fuels than a gasoline engine... Heck, the corn cobs, leaves, and stalks used to make Ethanol can be converted into bio-diesel, as well as garbage waste from landfils...If anything, a CRD can clean up the environment. Bring on the 3.0L V-6 CRD for the Commander, the Cherokee, and the Wrangler TK. |
