LibertyTougher Emission Standards Force DaimlerChrysler to Kill Liberty CRD
Posted by mike on 2006/6/8 19:30:00 (784) reads

Despite the Liberty selling about as twice as fast as DaimlerChrysler predicted last year (11,000 vehicles vs. 5,000 predicted), new, tougher emission standards that go into effect next year are forcing DaimlerChrysler to cancel production of the Libery CRD.

From DetNews.com:

While DaimlerChrysler's Jeep brand is touting its plan to build a Grand Cherokee with a fuel-efficient diesel engine, the automaker quietly ended production of a successful diesel version of its Jeep Liberty SUV for the U.S. market.

The reason? The engine for the compact SUV doesn't meet tougher federal emissions standards that go into effect next year, and Chrysler said it wasn't cost-effective to the replace the engine with a more modern version.

"The emission standards are becoming very stringent, and we weren't able to make a credible business case for a limited production vehicle," Chrysler spokeswoman Dianna Gutierrez told The Detroit News.

I also have an '04 Unllimited. I have asked this before but will again. Why can't the Cummins diesel be adapted for the new Wranglers, especially the 4 dr. Unlimited.

Well, that sucks. I have a prediction, though.
Most of the posts I have read about diesel Jeeps have been by men, like myself. The Liberty was not exactly a manly vehicle like the Wrangler is. Nice, just not my first choice of body styles and set up. I think they were testing the water with the diesel Liberty and by 2008, the Wrangler will be available with a diesel option in North America...one that meets new emissions standards. Let's all hope this is the case. I am not giving up my '04 Unlimited until they do! Actually, might not give that up ever. I would kick the reliable '01 4Runner to the curb for a diesel 4 door Wrangler Unlimited.

Hello..... DCX ?

The diesel Liberty (with a new engine) will also probably make a return in the 2008 model year with the redesign of the Liberty. It wouldn't make much financial sense for DCX to engineer a new CRD engine for the existing model as it will only be around one more year.
