Grand CherokeeGrand Cherokee SRT?

We didn't believe it either!

Last week, one of our readers sent us a link to a rumor about a possible Grand Cherokee SRT (Street and Racing Technology):

WKJEEPS.COM has a note about a possible SRT model of the Grand Cherokee.  They state that this could possibly be an "Overland" model but I doubt this because the current Overland is geared for luxury and off-road capability versus speed and performance.  The transition from Up-Country Suspension and rock rails to a lowered vehicle geared towards performance would be an odd badging choice.

Today, we found not just a 2nd source for this rumor, but also some spy shots of the vehicle as well! AutoWeek.com has this to say about it:

Chrysler has hinted that a performance-tuned Jeep from the company’s Street and Racing Technology shop might be in the works. Judging by these photos of the hot Grand Cherokee SRT on the road, we’d say the project is past the broad hint stage and well on its way to market. Look for the über Jeep to eschew the marque’s legendary off-road prowess, with a lowered suspension and performance-rated tires for superior on-road handling. And yeah, we’re pretty sure it’s got a Hemi—probably the same 6.1-liter 425-hp, 420-lb-ft V8 under the hood of Chrysler’s Pebble Beach beauty.

Hey, Why not?? Afer all, some gold tooth-wearing, pants below his a$$, C(rap)-Star-wanna-be disadvanteged inner-city youth is just going to buy a stock GC, sell some more crack, and get his ride "pimped" out at some customizing shop, anyway, complete with the really obnoxiuos boom-boom stereo, so why should'nt DC charge a premium and sell a street-performance version, and make the profit? It's the Neon SVT formula, sell the hot-rod version and make the profit, instead of letting the aftermarket get it.
Besides, a Cherokee SVT could be the basis for a Police Cruiser version, complete with Hemi V-8 and AWD.
