Concept/DemonstrationWillys2 Concept Expands Go-Anywhere, Do-Anything Attitude of Jeep Brand
Posted by mike on 2001/10/23 23:00:00 (296) reads

Continuing the momentum of its award-winning Jeep® Willys concept vehicle, the Chrysler Group design team today presented its first Tokyo Motor Show world premiere design study: the radical Jeep Willys2 concept.

"Willys2 embodies the Jeep brand's core values of fun, freedom and legendary capability, generating interest from the young and young at heart," said Jordan Meadows, Product Designer at Chrysler Group's Pacifica Advanced Design Center in Carlsbad, Calif.

As executed in the Jeep Willys concept -- which won the Gold Award in the 2001 Industrial Design Excellence Competition sponsored by Business Week magazine and the Industrial Design Society of America -- Willys2 also was designed with an unsurpassed amount of imagination and adventure.

The ultra-modern interpretation of trademark Jeep design cues, including the seven-slot grille and trapezoidal wheel arches, makes Willys2 stand out at any auto show. The vehicle is finished in Action Green metallic paint.

Yet with this newest concept, the Jeep brand continues to develop products reflecting true Jeep values. A combination of honest heritage and modern technology, Willys2 sports a high-tech machined appearance while still evocative of its World War II ancestor, the Willys MB, a vehicle that quickly earned a reputation as an American hero. Although a concept vehicle with no imminent production plans, Jeep Willys2 embraces its past while looking forward toward its global future.

New Concept Vehicle Technology
Willys2 also continues to lead the industry by using frame-web technology with a one-piece carbon fiber body on an aluminum frame. Found in today's top performance sports and military equipment, Willys2 has a lightweight aluminum frame and carbon fiber hardtop that is removable.

The hard top comes equipped with a roof rack featuring a full-size spare tire holder and an integrated luggage carrier, as well as bindings for multiple kinds of outdoor gear. Three auxiliary fog and search lamps emphasize the 'go-anywhere do-anything' attitude that is characteristic of the Jeep brand.

"We call it the pure American," said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President of Design for the Chrysler Group. "The Jeep Willys2's usefulness and versatility were developed to exist in ecological harmony with nature, while being perfectly suited for the rigors of an active lifestyle."

The Jeep Willys2, which weighs approximately 1350 kg (3,000 lb.), is powered by a 1.6-liter, in-line four-cylinder engine that has been supercharged to deliver 120 kW (160 bhp) and 210 Nm (155 lb.-ft.) of torque. Its four-speed automatic transmission is coupled with a shift-on-the-fly transfer case with full-time four-wheel drive and low-range modes. Estimated performance figures include a sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph.) in about 10 seconds and a top speed of almost 140 km/h (90 mph.)

Willys2's chiseled design lends substance and visual weight, suggesting a low center of gravity with a long wheelbase (2413 mm/95 in.) and wide track (1496 mm/58.9 in. front, 1509 mm/59.4 in. rear.) It features a custom, independent short-and-long-arm front and multi-link solid rear axle suspension, with coil springs at all four wheels.

The spacious interior blends colors of aqua and silver, providing an honest and mechanical appearance. Translucent plastics allow for a new approach to Jeep design while remaining true to the brand's legendary versatility.

"You can still take a water hose to this interior and clean it out," said Meadows.

Underpowered, poseur junk. This thing is an embarassment to the Jeep name. This just about puts me off of the Jeep marquee for good. The Liberty was the first nail in the coffin.

This is not the sort of thing Jeep buyers are looking for!

I agree that this is underpowered and needs a 5 speed manual. The design is too artsy-fartsy for me. There are enough me-too wantabe offroad vehicles. How about one for the serious offroader?

This thing (and the Willys concept it's based on) have got to be the butt-ugliest things I've ever seen (even more so than the Aztec).

DC is definately headed away from what a Jeep needs to be. Looks like I'll be keeping our 2 TJs if this thing is anything like what we have to look foward to. Man I wish DC would listen to the people and build the Dakar.

HI I AGREE WITH SEAN M, I CURRENTLY OWN A 2001 Jeep Cherokee Limited (XJ)-for the those who don't realize that Jeep actually did make an XJ, with leather seats, and anyway I probably will purchase a Jeep Wrangler before Jeep screws it up too.

I'm not sure whether it needs a lower beltline or a higher roof, but it needs one or the other. The rear side windows ought to be fully rectangular, perhaps in the style of the 2-door Cherokee. And it needs a more powerful engine. The roof is a good place for the spare tire; it doesn't create the accident hazard that an outside spare does, or use up interior space like an inside spare. In summary, it needs work, but it's a step in the right direction from the original Willys concept.

I don't know what to say about the composite body, but 20 inches of ground clearance sounds awesome - does anyone know whether or not this number is correct? And if Jeep has to include an IFS, why not go all the way and offer a hummer-like suspension (fully independent). Throw an I-6 or 4.7 V-8 under the hood, replace the leather with canvas, add a manual transmission, and offer manual lockers, you might have something.

I don't know about this...it doesn't have the good things that the XJs had and it doesn't have the good things the CJs had. It doesn't look like it has any interior space, and it doesn't look like it has the good open-ness that CJs had.

But - from what I heard, the Wrangler as it stands now won't pass muster with safety requirements in place by the next redesign, so I don't expect the CJ to ever come back.

Also - Automotive News is saying DC is calling this an inexpensive jeep to be priced below the Wrangler. See: http://www.autonews.com/article.cms?articleId=37017

BAD NEWS....... VERY BAD NEWS:
thecarconnection.com quotes Trevor creed as
saying the Willys is the first of many Jeeps that
will no longer be required to pass the Rubicon
test in order to earn the Jeep nameplate.
Creed says future Jeep buyers will be more
sophisticated and the Rubicon mandate is no
longer appropriate!!!!! EVEN WORSE:
Sutoweek says that the light duty Willy's is not
a new vehichle in the lineup.... but instead a
LIKELY REPLACEMENT FOR THE AGING
WRANGLER!!!!!! HAHAHAHA I take back what I
said last time, DC is going to drive Jeep right
into the ground, I do like the Willy's though, too
bad it wasn't made for real off-road duty with
an I6 and a Manual Tranny ........ Trevor Creed
& DC SUCK!!!!

Ok, let me get this straight... carbon fiber body, and aluminum chassis are supposed to be light weight (not to mention costly and VERY, VERY expensive to repair) yet the concept vehicle still weighs 3000lbs.

Independent front suspension, 21" wheels!, and a 1.6 liter 4 banger... HELL honda puts larger engines in their cars these days! The current Wrangler w/190HP and 235Lb Ft. torque is just enough to push that rig and DC claims 10 second 0-60 times on this Willys abortion... yeah right, maybe with a hurricane for a tail wind!! And 87MPH top speed, forget passing anything besides a MOPED on the Interstate.

I thought a concept vehicle was supposed to showcase the latest and emerging technology of a vehicle maker.... this just makes me laugh!

Lets try this for a concept...take the current Wrangler, install a V8, dana 44 axles front and rear, full time 4x4, four doors, updated stying (inclusive of more safety features, etc.) and there you go... progress with heritage... this thing is a disgrace to Willys. The original Jeep designers are surely turning in their graves!

Just what does DC / Jeep think people want from a Jeep? There are plenty of econo 4x4's out there, they do not need to ruin the Jeep name and heritage to add another.

I have previously owned two Cherokee's and currently own a 2000 Cherokee and a 2001 Wrangler, i won't be buying any more Jeep vehicles.

Ok, I kind like this one, put a 6 cylinder engine
and a manual tranny in it, and combine it with
the rumored 4 door wrangler in 2006 (Car &
Truck last week) ...and there may be hope for
Jeep down the road after all...... until then I''ll
take out a 3 year lease on a SC Xterra!

P.S. The Liberty still Sucks!

My first reaction when I laid eyes on this concept was "That's kinda cool !". I
also like it better than the Liberty, I think...I'am not sure. I agree with one of the previous post about the roof line or belt line needing some work. It seems
to me that the roof could be a tad taller. Also the roof rack seems a little to tall, if you look at the side windows they are almost the same height as the side rails of the roof rack (thats not normal). As for the wheels and tires they look
like those that used to come on those old STOMPERS toys of a few years ago.
Real world rolling stock would help alot. I would like to see a photo with a real
person standing next to it to get a better feel about its size. If they ever build
this concept they had better put a real engine in it, 90 mph top speed takes
me back to the days of Pinto's and Vega's, that didn't work way back in the
20th century, much less in the 21st century. Overall its got potential.

I thought the Liberty looked bad, this Willy's concept looks nothing like an original Willy's, so what is DC Jeeps' point? Why? I was raised on Jeeps all my life, and this Willy's concept looks like something out of a futuristic Walt Disney cartoon geared for 5 year olds? DC your not selling to 5 year olds, your selling to people 18 on up-get practical keep the wrangler, update the body, keep the solid axle, keep the I-6, BUT BOOST THE HORSEPOWER LIKE GM! And while your at it put lots of plastic on it, and women will buy it.

I think it looks pretty good. I don't go for the little windows in the rear. It make sit look like a sports car to me. I was raised in a Jeep (at times it was all that was in the garage at home) so the big windows in back are what makes me think of a Jeep. I think with this we will see the future of things to come. I'm guessing that the front end of the Willys2 will look a great deal like that of the new TK in '06. I expect a radical new design. i found a great site for Jeep infor besides this one. You should go to www.car-truck.com . This guy seems to know all the right people inside of Jeep and DC. Check out the latest on the new TK there! As my kids would say... Jeeps Rule, all others Drool.

i disagree about the beltline and windows. I think
the current Wranglers could use a higher safer
body, and a bit less rear side window. I do think
they still need more space aka back seat and storage. But I do like it with the rack and all.
4 doors someday?
