Re: Wrangler Unlimited? Hey Everyone out there with UN-TJ's. Congrats on your purchase. As a CJ-6 owner, it is nice to see so many of my "Grandkids" out there. Jeeps has been known to stretch the Universal Jeep on many different platforms. My CJ-6 was the first stretched universal. They are 20" longer than a stock CJ-5 and were used primarily in the military carrying the M-170 name. I have restored my 1974 to original with the exception of adding a '99 4.0 to it for improved driveability. the CJ-8 or "Scrambler" was next to be streched followed by the YJ Wrangler, which was built overseas. I am glad Chrysler stayed with history and built the Unlimited.
OK- technically, they are identical the the TJ of the same build. they ride and handle better due to the obviously longer wheelbase. They only issues I have seen to date involve the 6-speed trans. An accidental move to reverse while in a forward motion will clash gears and cause the reverse gear and related parts to go south. As you know, the 6-speed has very stiff detents and it is easy to "slip up" and hit the wrong shift gate. There is a TSB which involves replacing reverse gear and related blocker, detent and rail if yours becomes damaged. teh symptom you will have is it will not go into reverse intermittently. If you are out of warranty (hope not) I would contact Chrysler and let them know you are aware there is a technical service bulletin which addresses the issue. They will most likely offer a goodwill claim to fix it for you. Aside from that, keep the gas cap tight and enjoy!! The Jeeper |
