Xj bonnet mounted spare? Hi I’m wondering whether there is any kit available that would allow me to mount a 2nd spare tire on top of my XJ’s bonnet.
My friend and I are planning for some long range dessert touring here in Australia and that requires me to be genuinely self sufficient for a couple of days… Anyway, all the local publications state that the bare minimum for a dessert cross of that kind is two spares. And since the insides of my jeep will be packed with a week worth of provisions, including 5x20L jerries of petrol. And on the roof, I’ll have more supplies plus a roof top tent. Nor do I want to break my back, hauling a 30” MT/R tire on top of my roof. I was wondering If there is any spare wheel mounts for the bonnet available?? Like the Land rover defender has for example? Or a dual tire mount that would fit 2 x 30” side by side on the back? Cheers |

Re: Xj bonnet mounted spare? there aren't any out there that i'm aware of, but consider two things: XJ engine bays barely get enough heat out as it is, and that spare will severely reduce forward vision due to the XJ's relatively narrow windscreen (I know because I've tried this before :) ).
It may be possible to mount the spare carrier from a TJ on the hood/bonnet, but I'd be concerned about doing this on the relatively thin sheet metal. Check out www.naxja.org for more ideas. You'll probably need to go with the roof, though. |
