Need help with 4x4 conversion of 2 wheel '88 Comanche Help! I own two Comanches an '89 2.5L 4x4 and an '88 4.0L 2-wheeler. I had the bright idea of purchasing the '88 and convert it to 4x4 with parts from my '89 which had an engine fire. I spoke with two mechanics from different dealers and was told it was feasible and everything should bolt-up. It's that word "should" that has given me fits!! So far it has applied and everything has gone rather smoothly. The '89 had a Trailmaster 3-4" lift that I purshased and installed years ago myself, so I had an idea of what I was getting into. To the best of my knowledge the '89 and '88's are machanically identical. I have noticed a few minor differences between the 4x4 and 2-wheel models. Nothing major yet though. My current problem is this...I installed the front-end Dana axle from the '89 with lift kit on the '88 last night. It seemed to me that the axle was shifted left towards the driver's side (left side) and the traction/sway bar did not want to line up. I disconnected the torsion bar and the right lower control arm and shoved the axle over a few inches to the right. This allowed the sway bar to align up to the brackets, but only barely. The axle appears to be lining up now, but I have yet to reconnect the torsion bar. The original Trailmaster instructions called for a new hole for the torsion bar to be drilled 3/4" to the left of the original hole which has been done. In it's current state of disconnection the bar is about 3/4" furhter to the left of the newer hole. It's driving me mad trying to figure out the perceived problem. Is the '88 2-wheel chassis actually different than the '89 4x4 and is that what's causing the problem??? Is it something else, or am I just worrying over nothing?? Help! Ruari |
