I'm considering installing a lunch box locker in my Dana 30 and it seems to me that if the hubs are not locked in, then the unit should not make any noise. Would this be correct?

Correct...if by 'make noise' you mean when it engages. If your front hubs aren't in 4WD, it won't engage/lock.

Yes, that was what I meant. I was pretty sure that would be the case, but then I began wondering if I was missing something. Thanks for the reply.

Your carrier will be the weak link.

Yes, that page is a wealth of info.

I'm considering the LBL because I can install it without having to set up the ring and pinion. I would definitely consider an alternative, if it were not for the R&P set up business.

Be a good time to replace your axle u-joints since you have to tear down the whole front end to remove the carrier.
You should also look at Mile Marker Hubs. Way better than Warn.

Ironic that you mentioned hubs, LG. I was intending to start a thread concerning that very subject, asking for advice.

And yes, it would be a very good time to inspect/replace those components (after all, my CJ7 has 256 thousand miles on it, almost all of it from the PO's).
