I have a auto meter sendind unit and gas gauge but cant seem to make them work I was told maybe ground issue I have a 30 gallon aluminum fuel cell do I ground fuel cell or sending unit?

my wiring diagram shows that the sending unit must be grounded! if the variable resistor (sending unit) doesn't have a grounding connection on it then
i'm kinda at a loss.

Exactly... The body of the sending unit has to be grounded, either by attaching a ground wire to the sending unit body, through the tank or both.

To test the gauge, just connect the sending wire directly to ground, it should show full.
