Best Color for a CJ?

What's the best color on a CJ?


I plan to paint mine GM Code 29, a midnight blue that looks black in low light.

I would have a tuff time deciding a color if someone said hey I'll give you a free paint job, what color do you want ? Midnight blue would be in the top 5 along with a nice red and maybe a little lighter blue than midnight.

Where I live-White or tan.
When I bought my Jeep new 34 yrs ago. I had tan as my first choice, and white was my second.
Two dealers could not find a Ca model in tan.
One dealer had the white one I bought on his lot.

Pewter Grey or Firecracker Red with Levi Edition's blue top / interior. Both 1976 color combinations. In my humble opinion.

I had my 76 CJ5 painted in Natural Green Pearl (it was red):

Hack, love that color! I wasnt too keen on the dark brown metallic on my 8 when I first got it because the darker the color, the more stuff shows. That all changed after the first trip out wheeling with some buddies. 2 guys had white XJ's and another had a dark green CJ7. Out in the desert we parked at the base of a huge wash out that led to an abandoned mine shaft on a hillside. When we got to the top and looked back to where the Jeeps were at, only the white ones were noticeable. I like going un-noticed and learned to like the dark brown that day

If you're talking original type color and decal combo, my number one would be that rusty metalic brown with the orange and yellow trim decals. Next woupd probably be black with the fire orange decals. My dad had a 1980 Scottsdale just about the same color as that rusty metallic brown. Loved it then and still like that color the best. The yellow and orange decals just set it off for that era feel too. Had a 1970 Monte Carlo Jaguar Racing green. That'd be my 3rd choice. It's deep dark green until light hits it then it pops.

I got Maaco to paint my old CJ5 Metallic Grey. I loved how it came out. Too bad I had to sell it.

So here is how it will work. I always wanted a white Jeep so in 1992 I painted my CJ5 Toyota Superwhite and loved it for a very long time until one day I realized I hated the basic white and wanted a more popping color. Well i sold the CJ5 after 27 years to help finish the CJ8. When I built my Scrambler I wanted something more modern and current so I went with Eastwood's Sunset Metallic Orange. I have had the Scrambler this color for about 3 years and although it is a nice color I really wish I went with the original Metallic Brown. I personally think the OEM colors are the best for our classics.
