Will 304 heads swap over to a 360 block? Not looking to build a hi-po engine, but amc 360's seem to be rare around here and I found a shortblock. He said he was bit by the soft gear hard gear thing on the distributor. So the cam gear is probably shot then? I need to go look at it. But the heads are gone. Just wondering if the heads will interchange.

There is a difference in the earlier I believe 1970ish heads and the later dog leg port cylinder heads, they changed the size of the head bolts. If you have a later 304 and are looking at a later 360 your good. If the cam got wiped out by the cam gear then the whole motor is toast, it will need a complete rebuild

Ok. I don't know what year the 360 is. My 304 is a 79. I think I'll just keep looking for something more complete.

I'd pass on that also. I have a hard time believing an otherwise good engine was ditches over maybe $50 worth of parts. And it would have been more work to pull the engine than to change the distributor drive gear.
