I'm putting a new head unit in my 85 CJ7 and the old harness the PO put in got power and ground through the cigarette lighter. Just wanted to check and see if that is acceptable?

Cig lighter power is OK.
I would go with a dedicated GND.

I will use a dedicated wire for both. Cig lighter is ok but there is a radio wire that comes from the fuse box for power if not you can run a wire from the battery

My radio required 2 power inputs, one that is always on (for memory and clock) and one that is switched, coming from the fuse panel. I ran new dedicated wires to both. At the fuse panel, there was an unused "RADIO" pin that accepted my new wire (I do heat shrink connectors, and used a flat spade end to match the pinchers on the RADIO spot on the fuse block). The 'always on' wire I ran through the firewall to the battery (actually I have a power distribution block, but it's the same concept). I didn't need to fuse that line because the radio had an inline fuse already in it. Radios just run on 12 volts so any power source is good, as long as you don't overload that circuit. If you still have a working cig lighter, you run the risk of blowing a fuse if use it at the same time you are blasting your radio.
