I was reading an old post about the 4 rubber bumpers on the original tire carrier. I just refurbished mine and I am wondering, what is the threaded hole for in between and above the two center bumpers below the tire?

I think you mean the threaded hole, where the tire itself is prevented from
moving.

Looking at Lutry's pic, you can see that it helps stop the spare tire from bouncing around. It sounds like you are missing it. I would think you local hardware store could supply a carriage bolt with a rounded head to replace it with. Those spare tire mounts really take a beating so make sure it is all snug and tight. As you drive take a look back an watch to see if it is bouncing or wobbling around.

Somehow I am missing the correct wordings ,
it is not my mother tongue...
But this is what I wanted to say...

I used a chrome bumper mount bolt, nice & smooth against the rubber.
