Hi All, I'm new to the forum. Also new to having a Jeep although I grew up in a 57 Willy's with my Dad and Mom driving it as our second family vehicle. I am 55 and wanting to get this thing road ready for the Gambler 500 in Oregon.

I recently got an 83 CJ7 that runs but not well. I have narrowed it down to the carb needing to be replaced. Any suggestions on what to get would be greatly appreciated and maybe a reason why it is good or bad.

Also I have two gauges not working. Temp and Fuel. Cant seem to figure them out. I'm thinking I may need to just replace them. If so, where should I start looking for best prices?

Thanks in advance

You would be better off to learn to rebuild what you have.
What carb is on it now?
Also-Take a wrench and check all the manifold bolts.
You really need to get a copy of the REAL factory Service Manual(FSM).

The '83 Should have a 258 that has the carb and ignition controlled by a computer. The computer should be located behind the glove box and the carb should have a wiring harness attached to the rear. At least that's the way they came from the factory. If you are having carb issues, I would suggest a professional rebuild. That worked for me even after years of doing my own carb work. There is a kit you can get to repair the fuel and temp gauges and they work together like this one:https://www.amazon.com/Omix-Ada-1720...BG8MSMZY75S4Q4. Here is a link for diy gauge repair work:Basic Troubleshooting for CJ gauges. I would at least suggest running the fuel gauge sender unit wire to a battery negative for a better ground connection.

I guess we could debate what to do with your carburetor for millennia but I will just throw out that I would avoid the Weber 258 carb. We had one on a J10 and although it started well there was no way to tune it to have good mid range. It was either idling well or running at full throttle well. Everything in between was weak.

RE Fuel Gauge: a fresh ground cable directly to the sending unit might help. Fixed mine.
