My ‘84 has a YJ roof on it. I picked up a CJ7 roof but my YJ roof is in much nicer shape. Are there any alterations that can be done so the YJ hatch is openable without going in and unlatching the tailgate first?
Would the CJ hatch fit the YJ roof?

Maybe dumb questions, but thanks in advance. lol

Edit: Did a little searching and saw a ton of threads on CJ/YJ hardtop. Didn’t see anything on alterations to make the YJ hatch work on the CJ. Hopefully someone can advise.

From what i had read/understand when i was looking for a hardtop. Cj lift gate won't fit a Yj top. If you have a '87-'91 Yj top, it should have a T-handle latch on the outside of the lift gate(on the left i believe rather then center like a Cj) and acts like a CJ lift gate. Those years, all you have to do is trim the bottom of the lift gate to clear the Cj tailgate and you can open and close the lift gate from the outside with tailgate up. As far as fitment and air/water leakage, i dunno. Just what i have read... The newer YJ top lift gates don't have a latch to secure it and the tail gate is what holds it in place, so nothing you can do with them.
