Question did you set the timing with the vacuum advance hooked up or plugged off?

U need to plug it then set the timing but only once it's up to operating tempture

Disconnected the vacuum advance, plugged it off and set the idle to 700 before setting the timing. After the engine was at operating temp. That's why i'm scratching my head. I thought I'd done everything right....but i'm missing something.

Need a better description of the symptoms. Double check your terminations for power to the distributor. Be sure you pulled power from a reliable and adequate source. To rule that out you can run a wire directly from batt pos to the distributor and test drive.

Sounds more likely to be fuel side to me. Check: fuel fliter (return nipple above the supply nipple), float level, fuel press if you have a gauge.

Also not a bad idea to buy/borrow a dial back timing light, rev the engine to 3500 and see where timing is (vac adv disconnected).
