Copied this from my build thread. Any help is appreciated.

Ok I have all my plug wires run and everything looks good. Number #1 is right where my mark is and so is the vaccum advance. Now here's where I get nervous. I'm not very good with electrical stuff. Sorry you'll have to click links to see the pics , I'm going to figure that out soon too. I refuse to pay a monthly fee for Photobucket.

First pic is showing a solid red wire coming from my fuse box into the engine compartment. I was thinking this is the wire I should be using to power the HEI. At the fuse panel it has a wire coming off it for a clock for a stereo. To me this means it's constantly "Hot". Is the distributor wired with voltage going to it 24/7? I'd think this is a key on only thing.

Now that red wire goes along the firewall to the other side of the engine in some split loom and leads up to the distributor. I believe there's a resistor wire that it runs to before the distributor. It's the large red one at the bottom of the split loom.

Here you can see all the wires taped up that went to the coil of the old set up. Pretty simple withe the green-green and red-red. Am I supposed to run the heavier gauge red wire to the distributor along with the smaller red wire right to the coil? I am electrical challenged , please help. 😂

Ur making this a bigger deal than it needs to be. H.E.I. is a simple set up. One wire is for tach the other is for power. Simply take ur 12 volt switch power wire from your old distributor and wire into the power side of ur new one.

I was under the impression that the smaller wire that ran to my coil originally wasn't sufficient for the new distributor but if so yup tach wire and power wire and I'm ready to go.

It's only 12 volts of power ur fine but if ur really concerned simply run a new wire to ur 12 volt switch power. The only thing u want to make sure of is that the wire is not damaged burnt or cut etc etc etc

All good answers, you need a full switched 12 dc to the HEI. There is a red / white tracer wire (your second pic) which is full switched 12 vdc, this wire is heavy enough to supply the HEI. In some instances the wire to the stock dist. is not full 12 vdc., it's either a resistive wire or run through a ballast resistor which will drop the voltage.

This was what I was talking about , worded much better. Thanks. I'll get it wired up tonight after work.

I don't want to hi-jack the thread but i'm having an HEI problem too. I installed an HEI distributor from A-team performance in the 81 CJ7 (.258 engine), wired everything and set the timing. Started and idled great on the first turn. When driving, it won't take high RPM under load. Spits and sputters, generally runs like crap. I can feather the clutch keeping the Rs up and drive through it, but i've never seen anything like this before.

Any ideas will be much appreciated.

Again, not trying to Hi-jack, but i didn't want to start a new thread on the same subject.

Bender

Could be the vacuum advance or it could be ur carburetor

Disconnected the vacuum advance and it ran like a champ before i replaced the distributor, so i'm not questioning the carburetor.

Unless it's a centrifugal advance problem and i need a stronger spring?
