When did the roll bars change from being mounted just on top of the wheel wells to having the front "legs" extend down to the floor behind the seats? I am wondering if a wheel well mounted bar can be fitted into my 80 in place of the bar extending all the way down in order to give me more room. My tall back seat hits the bar when all the way back and I could actually use a little more leg room if possible. I dont think the tacked "belly room notch" thread is applicable or helpful for a CJ7.

I donít remember the breakover, but if I remember correctly it kinda overlapped for a short period of time. Physically it should fit fine - Should have been no change in tub design, except for the reinforcement plates to mount the bar.

Looks like 80 was the crossover year. Early production having the wheel well mounted bar and later production having the extended floor mounted front legs.

It was 1979. Most had the later bar, but some had the earlier bar. My dad had a 79 with the new bar. I recall the dealership having a few with the older bar in the lot.
