My wife and I have a '84 CJ-8. Body is fiberglass and in good shape, but frame behind rear wheels is bad. Are there good patch kits for this or can a good welder simply piece-part patches to fix? Attached are some shots.

Sandblast the area and then do the hammer check.

I just installed the auto rust.com repair kit on my 83 CJ. Same problem. Great kit, great product, perfect repair.
The repair pieces come with the welded nuts for the rear spring shackle mounts. Get you tape measure out and get yourself a good welder (equipment and person) to weld it up for you. Mine was REALLY bad and there was not a lot of the frame left back there. Still worked perfectly!
Here are some before and after pics.

Just remember if you get a prefab kit to fix it it has to be Cj-8 specific. The rear frame area of a Scrambler is quite different than a Cj-7

Great! this shows the body off the frame though - can kits be installed with body on the frame?

Yes. Many people have installed them with the body on. Just remove the rear most body mount. Actually, remove the bolts from all but the mount under the radiator and jack the body up a couple of inches. Block it up with a couple pieces of wood to give yourself more room to work. Plan on replacing the rear crossmember. They are not expensive and you will end up cutting your original up to get the frame pieces out and back in.
