Hello All,

I'm thinking about parting out the 1980 CJ with the Iron Duke. That engine package is just not worth replacing, IMHO.

I've found a very nice 1973 CJ-5 that originally had a 258 but now has a SBC.

Since I have to deal with emissions here, can anyone tell me what emissions components were on a 1973 with a 304?

-I don't believe they had cat. converters?

-I don't believe they had the fuel filler neck restriction for unleaded only?

-I don't believe they had any evaporative emissions equipment (Fuel tank venting)?

-I DO believe they did have PCV?

Are those assumptions correct?

Thanks All.

I think it did....the charcoal canister was a part of it?

Well, here in the birthplace of automobile emissions inspections, vehicles older than '74 no longer require testing.

but since he doesn't live near you, that really means nothing to the OP I'm sure...

My '74 only has a charcoal canister under the left fender, I believe. My engine isn't stock, so I can't say for certain if it had a PCV system or not.

Cats, smog pumps, and charcoal canisters all came in existence on a CJ in 1972 as it was/is considered a !/4 ton vehicle (which it really is) so the powers that be lumped them in with cars and they were saddled with smog controls. Vehicles of a certain GVW (I donít remember the exact number) were exempt at first, which turned out to be Ĺ ton pickups at the top end of their GVW range. At that time no one gave much thought to the fact that cats put out a lot of heat so the grass fires ensued. Within a few years the smog Nazis captured even the ĺ ton trucks by continuing to raise the GVW exemption and now everyone shares the blight.

They test here, in AZ, back to 1967. It rolls up one model year every three calendar years.
