Question for the masses,
I'm thinking of replacing my steering gearbox and am looking at the AGR gearbox does anyone have any good or bad experience with them?

I donít have any experience with them but they are the variable ratio steering boxes which will be nice on the highway

IMO, they seem grossly overpriced for what they are. If you want a variable rate (which I really like for a CJ on the street) you can get a FSJ box for under $100. You will need a CJ manual coupling for the box though. Or if you can find an H1 box, it's a direct bolt in for an 80+ CJ, is variable rate and a bigger piston. They run under)200 last time I checked.

So how does the variable rate box differ from an original box that is on my jeep now ? It works well the way it is. Thanks

When the box is in the center itís 16 to 1 which is good for being on the highway as it doesnít turn as fast, then towards the left and right the ratio speeds up to 14.5 to 1 I think which turns the wheels faster

What he said ^^

To me, the stock CJ power steering feels very "twitchy" and too sensitive on the highway. Maybe it's because I had manual steering for so long, idk. The variable rate Waggy box in mine feels much more natural.

Ok thanks. My seems good, not that I would want to really go faster than 65-70 on a good road anyway, I have another vehicle for that

My '78 acts like jp360cj jeep and I feel the same way about my'84 as Belizean does with his. My '84 drives better than the Cherokee I had I just chalked it up to narrow trac versus wide trac but may have more to do with the steering box being different between those years.

I don't think there's any difference in the steering box between those years other than the hose fitting sizes. And I don't know that I've ever driven one with a '79 and older stock steering box. I've driven 1 '78 with Power steering, but it was bought with a lot of 80s parts (like WT axles), so I'm not sure which box it had. And the only NT I've driven with power steering had wheel spacers so the width was the same as a WT. Most of the stock power steering CJs I've driven were 83-86 Wide tracks and they all seemed about the same to me (too sensitive).

But my '77 came with manual steering and I drove it like for probably 7-8 years, and for the first few it was my DD. When I upgraded to Power steering, I went with a Waggy box (variable rate) and really like it.
