Hi all, I recently bought a survivor '65 CJ5 from a family friend. It has the original F4-134 Hurricane engine. However, I'm unable to make sense of the serial number. According to various lists online, it's supposed to be a 13-digit number. Mine, though, only has a 10-digit number. (8305 172989)

The 83 and the 05 are correct: it's a universal CJ5 with an open body. But then it falls apart. There's no letter for the 5th position, just a space. Not sure what that means. Moving on, the 6th digit (counting the space as a digit) is a 1 which supposedly means left-hand drive, so that's okay. But the 7th digit is a 7 which supposedly means it has a V6-225 with emissions which is most certainly does not.

Anyway, any insight appreciated.

Thanks from a new member.

Your vin # is correct, all the info your reading online is wrong.
If someone else doesn't fill in the blanks I'll do it at some point tomorrow.

They did not go to the 13 digit VIN until about 83.

My 1980 only has 12.

Okay, thanks for the info. All I can go by is what I find online. For example, this table 1962 TO 1971 JEEP CJ VIN DECODER TABLE (https://www.morris4x4center.com/in4x...-1955-1971.htm) and the same table on https://www.jeepfan.com/tech/decodin...ers-1955-1971/

However, I just read a lengthy thread on another Jeep forum where the consensus seems to be that the first 4 digits are all that are info-related; the last 6 is the sequential serial number for that Jeep, and that factory records (which likely no longer exist) would be needed to get more info.

Anyway, it's not a big deal, I was just curious. Thanks all!

The fun part of it here in TX is that when you get it inspected their computer system requires the modern S/N and wont accept the old short ones. so they will add 0's before or after the S/N so their system will take it but when you go to get tags they can't find it unless you tell them to look for the extra 0's.

All the decoders you find on the web does not recognize the fact that Jeep VINs of this era can consist of 10, 11 or 13 digits. You already get what is encoded in your numbers.

83 = Universal CJ-5
05 = Open body
172989 = Sequential serial number

Your Jeep was built April 1964 (may have been titled 1965 as a left over 1964)

There should be a paint trim tag on the passenger side firewall showing color and interior, most go missing over the years.

They didn't start decoding drivetrains until 1972 when they adopted a VIN system similar to AMC cars.

Hope this helps
