I’m doing a frame off resto on an 85 CJ and I’m having trouble finding the original color of the frame, diffs, and suspension parts. From searching I see that many paint these parts satin or semi-gloss, but the original looks closer to flat-black to me. However, this could be the result of 34 years of use and fading.

For extra credit, has anyone compiled a parts color list that shows the original color for the major parts? When I restored a first gen Camaro a few years ago, I found such a list and it was very helpful. I swore I’d never do an original resto again after that experience, but for some reason I’m back at it again.

I appreciate any help others can provide.

IIRC-It's been 34+ yrs.:D
The frame and axles were a satin black.
Same for the skid plate & drive shafts.

Lol, man Mopar used 75% gloss to get their satin black and I think GM was only 25% gloss in their satin, unfortunately I have no idea what AMC used tho, I would love to know tho

Have you thought about powder coat? Lots more durable

I'm doing a frame off restore on mine. My 82 has 77k miles on it and the frame was in very good condition. The Black is definitely not flat. It was very close to Satin. That's what I went back with.

Thanks for the replies. I guess satin black it is.
