Is there any way to differentiate a Dana 25, 27 and 30 without disassembly? The '46 I just picked up has a D41 in the rear so I suspect it would have the original D25 in the front. But I sure would like to know for sure before I go explain to the wife why I'm buying not one but 2 new axles...

On Dana axles, "the model number is cast into the housing either on the right (facing the same way as the axle cover) lower web at the spot where the axle tube is pressed into the center section or in the nose of the housing near the pinion yoke." From the book Differentials, by Allen and Lyman.
So if you can get under and scrape any crud away, you should find your model number. We have the D25 and Dana 44 on our'543B. Hope this helps!

Hmmm......
The cover looks exactly like a Dana 30 to me. But instead of a 2 digit code on the lower right web I have 17038. All that I've been able to find online regarding that casting number is a bunch of other people trying to figure out what the heck they have.....

Closed knuckle = D25/27
Open Knuckle = Dana 30

From what I can see from the pics you no longer have the Ross steering = Dana 30

Ahhh... Thanks. That'll be the indicator. Closed knuckles for user. The steering was a later upgrade done by the previous owner.
