DaimlerChrysler's Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth and Jeep® brands had their best model year in history in 1999, selling 2,651,090 vehicles in the U.S., an 8 percent increase compared to 1998's record model year sales of 2,446,951 vehicles. Third quarter sales of 639,301 were also at an all-time high, a 9 percent increase over sales of 590,109 during the same period in 1996, and the fourth consecutive quarter in which those brands have posted record sales.
Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth and Jeep set 16 model year records, 15 quarterly records and 13 monthly records for the period ended in September. Among the model year records: sport utility vehicles, with sales of 731,251, up 24 percent from last year's 590,759; Jeep, with sales of 539,602, up 16 percent from last year; Jeep Grand Cherokee, 288,264, up 21 percent from 1998; and Jeep Wrangler, 88,908, an 8 percent increase compared to last year.
